I’ve received several e-mails lately linking to this site:
Essentially, they’re claiming that New York is about to name a street after convicted cop killer Mumia Amu-Jamal, and seeking signatures on a petition to prevent this.
I’m not seeking debate, just an answer: is this true, or just another internet hoax based on non-existent plans?
Snopes has nothing on this, but the relatives who’ve sent it to me are the type who fall for every internet legend that comes along, and I’d like to be able to set them straight, IF this is a load of manure.
Anybnody know the truth?
Can’t see why NYC would want to name a street after a cop killer from Philly.
Sounds like B.S. to me.
Not NYC, a Paris suburb: [Saint-Denis, France Names a Street After Mumia!
On April 29, 2006, a newly constructed street in Saint-Denis, (a town of 100,000 bordering Paris), was named Rue Mumia Abu-Jamal. In attendance in the street naming ceremony was the mayor, deputy mayors, representatives of International Concerned Family and Friends of Mumia Abu-Jamal, Free Mumia Abu-Jamal Coalition (NYC), and a large and very diverse group of individuals and organizations from France and the Caribbean.](http://www.freemumia.com/RueMAJ.html)
Mumia’s case has a fair amount of support in some sections of Europe.
Two years ago, there was a street in Paris named after Mumia.
So, from what I can see, there’s a street named after him in France and petition in Harlem, but there are no plans by the actual city of New York. The emails area response to a private petition, not any genuine municipal plan. It’s basically RO over nothing.
Europeans are absolutely wrong in this case. Wow.
In my old college there were signs up saying “Free Mumia” and meetings were held by socialists to that effect.
