Streets of Rogue

Is anyone else playing this game? It’s basically a roguelike set in a corrupt city instead of in a dungeon. It’s still in alpha, and it shows (for instance, only 80% of the levels even exist yet), but it has a heck of a lot of potential. There are a couple of dozen different classes, all with very different playstyles, but the developer has done a great job of making sure that the challenges can be overcome with any playstyle.

For instance, you might get a mission to retrieve a Macguffin Muffin from a particular person. You can, of course, kill the person and loot it off of their corpse, but you can also use the Thief to pick it out of their pocket, or bribe or threaten them into giving it to you. Even if you’re using lethal methods, it can be the typical shooting them or beating them with a baseball bat, but it can also be luring them into the sight of some other NPC who hates them, or using the Hacker to reprogram their building’s security system to turn against them. Or you can use the Cop to arrest them or the Doctor to knock them out with a chloroform hankie, which have the same effect as killing them.

Plus, the story, while not particularly deep, is quite amusing: You’re doing all of this as part of the Resistance against the tyrannical Mayor, whose main sin appears to have been throwing a really lame kegger at his inauguration.

Well worth the $7.50 I paid for it, and would have been worth it even at full price.

Picked it up at some point but haven’t played yet.

I also got it on sale and have definitely gotten my money’s worth, though it starts to get pretty ‘samey’ after a while. There’s definitely a lot of potential here, but they’re going to have to tighten up the objective-based play. Right now it’s just a sandbox that you drop a character into.

My favorite way to play was as a stealth/gadget character. It’s pretty fun neutralizing targets enemies with a wide variety of tools rather than spray’n’praying.

I did use the mod terminal to turn off the periodic disaster levels where you have to deal with bombs or radiation or what-have-you. I never found those to be very much fun.

I enjoyed unlocking new characters even if most of the new characters aren’t all that interesting to actually play with.

I had never even heard of it but based on your description I’ll definitely check it out.

I love roguelikes (my all-time favorite is Tales of Middle Earth/ToME) so I’ll have to check this out.

I find that in the zombie and riot disasters, you can pretty much just avoid the chaos until it’s mostly died down, and then play the level more or less as normal, just with a lot of corpses and item drops. And the radiation flashes and falling bombs just require you to be a little more alert while you’re going about your business, and can even help you achieve objectives. But the killer robot is a pain to deal with, and I hate being rushed with the hidden time bombs.

Personally, my favorite character is the Hacker. There’s usually a mission in the Hideout building, and he totally owns that one, with all of the hackable security. And you can usually find a way to hack any given mission, if nothing else by getting a free clone and making it do your fighting for you. Next favorite is the Cop: A lot of missions can be trivially solved with a single arrest, and if things go south, you just lead your target out into the streets and hide behind the Blue Wall.
