Stuff you finally got around to doing- post about it here!

Yesterday, I finally got around to going through the books in our attic, packing up the ones I was willing to get rid of, and taking them to Half Price Books to sell them. I sold about 30 plastic grocery bags full of books. I’ve been meaning to do this for a long time, but I never got around to doing it. Today, my calves are sore from going up and down the stairs (I can’t carry as much in one trip as I used to be able to do, now that I’m pregnant), but I am proud of myself for doing this. Being proud of yourself is naturally more satisfying if you can boast in public, so here I am.

What have you finally gotten around to doing lately that you would like to boast about?

Um, this isn’t really in the same vein, but after about a decade of wanting to go, I finally saw Cirque du Soleil on Friday night. They come to DC very rarely but they have a permanent show in LA (where I spent the last few days) and I said “Dammit, I’m going!” and bought a couple of tickets for me and my brother. I didn’t know if he would like it (he holds disdain for artsy types), but he absolutely loved it and so did I. Best $150 I ever spent. It was amazing and surpassed my expectations.

I painted the kitchen. Had the paint sitting around for over two months, have painted the rest of the rooms, but dreaded the kitchen. I still have some touch ups to do, but otherwise I now have a sunny yellow kitchen.

It’s not done yet, but it’s getting done, which is better than what’s been happening for several years.
Sorting, getting rid of, organizing, getting the house in order. I’m not being really ‘ruthless with my discards’ but I’m getting much better at ‘I’m never going to use this’. It’s something of a slow process, but so far it hasn’t come to a stop.

So I guess the thing I finally got around to doing is - getting started.

And I’m not stopping 'til it’s done.

I cleaned my apartment. Yes, I’m normally a slob. But this cleaning included cleaning the tub, putting up new shower curtain liners, washing the floor, and putting a new cover on my futon. It’s actually habitable by humans now!

This thread makes me want to go take a nap.
mmm

I finally cleaned out the refrigerator. I can’t believe how many expired products were in there. Don’t we ever eat at home? (well, not often, actually)

I finally took all the stuff to the thrift store. I’m sure I’ll find more.

Two days ago, I finally got around to seeing Carmina Burana live and holy hell was it worth the wait!
Two years ago I finally got around to going back to college.
An hour ago I finally got around to starting Stargate SG1 from the first episode.

I finally got my ditch enclosed and had a pipe and catch basin installed.

Now, I didn’t do it but I pulled the trigger on hiring someone and paying for it. Jesus was it expensive!

But once the grass grows back, I’ll never have to see that ugly weedy wet black marsh in my front yard again. Only been 7 years!

Finally stopped and looked at the Cadillac Ranch instead of just driving by.

A few months ago, finally bought a house, after spending a decade saying “someday when I have a house . . .”
Now I can do all the things I had put on hold until I had a house . . . like refinishing a table made by my great-great-grandfather. I sanded it down yesterday.

This may need its own thread. Did you go inside?

Mine…finally made an appointment with a therapist. Nothing is really wrong, I’ve just always thought it would be a good idea to get some help sorting things out. My current insurance covers (a portion of) ten visits per year so I am going to take advantage of it. I have made a number of significant changes over the last three years but I kind of feel like I’ve hit a wall, or plateau, of some sort. I thought maybe a professional could motivate me to, uh, get motivated.

ETA: Wait a minute, is that the place where the cars are buried in the desert?

Finally, at age 63, took up target shooting.

On Memorial Day, finally went to see the lighthouse across the road from the National Naval Aviation Museum. Went there, too. (Again.)

A few years ago, when my 30th birthday was looming, I decided I just had to learn how to knit. I don’t know WHY…but I was like, “Damn. I wanna learn how to do that!”.

So armed with a pair of size 8 aluminum needles by Boye, some fugly green Red Heart Super Saver acrylic yarn and a Youtube video, I set out to teach myself how to knit.

At first, I yelled a lot. In English. And Spanish. And Klingon. I hurled my needles across the room. I yelled at the YouTube video. I even cried when my purl stitches weren’t coming out right.

Eventually, though, I managed to catch on and while my first projects were quite ugly, I’ve also managed to make some rather pretty cool things. I particularly like making socks and fingerless mitts/gloves because I have a super short attention span and those kinds of projects don’t take very long.

Socks for my mommy

Mismatched Stripey Socks
Romulan Ale Socks

Wow! Those are really nice-looking.
A bit before Christmas somebody started a thread about a crochet project or something and it got me to try my hand at it again. Been working on this thing and that thing ever since. It’s the closest I ever get to meditation and I liken it to counting prayer beads.

I finished my novel. Now I’m looking for an agent. (Yes, I know about Preditors and Editors.)

Someone sent me a really nice card. I finally got around to thanking her for it.

One of these days, I’ll post that I finally got around to changing my <middle> name at the SS office, and DMV, and essentially letting the gov’t know I got married. As it’s been over a year and I still haven’t felt the urge, I don’t suspect it’ll be anytime soon. Besides, they should already know, since I had to tell Uncle Sam in the first place!!
