Thankfully there are some exceptions. Two of my favorites:
Wild Things - yum.
Bound - slobber. Especially the unrated version.
Trailers promise, films deliver.

Nicolas Cage
Haley Joel Osment
M. Night Shamyalan’s involvement in any capacity. I would skip a movie on general principles if he had somehow worked craft services for it.
Not something in a trailer, but if you first see a movie publicized the week it comes out, it means the studio knows full damn well it’s going to suck
Hey, I liked Sixth Sense and Unbreakable. After that- not so much.
Valgard, re Wild Things- yessireebob, youbetcha.
I hear the universe is ending in 2012, at the premiere of this movie.
The Wayans Brothers are… WHITE BABIES!
You’ll note I said “as a general rule”, largely because of these two notable exceptions.
Along these lines I’ve heard things like “Among the best reviewed films of 2008”. It just hurts my head, particularly if it’s early in the year.
I’d like to suggest that Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, and Midnight Run also be excepted. Otherwise, I’m with you, especially when talking animals are trying to get from here to there.
A friend of mine does sound editing for films. His first job out of college was for a company that works almost exclusively on trailers. He talked about how the trailer company had to call the producers of Hudson Hawk to have scenes shot for the trailer because NOTHING in the entire movie was usable.
The truly sad thing is when the trailer is better than the goddamn movie! And shorter by two hours.
