Stupid Examples of Misogyny

I saw it plenty - but I must point out I’ve only seen it happen with female support staff. There’s a certain type of female support staff who believe that women professional/managerial staff should answer their own phones, type their own correspondence, send their own emails and so on. And those very same people do not expect that of male professional/managerial staff - in fact, many of the male managers at my job ( a state agency) did not even make their own calls. I would answer the phone and hear “Please hold for Mr. Brown” - he would have his secretary make the call and wouldn’t get on the line until I was on the line. My secretary would have fallen out of her chair laughing if I asked her to do that.

Is this saying that women are stupid for valuing an infant’s life over winning a ballgame, or that men are stupid for feeling the opposite?

That’s a dig at men, not women.

The latter. It’s Barry calling his fellow men idiots who will prioritize stupid shit, a running theme in his work.

Yeah.

doreen, that reminds me - when I was on a search committee for a small, conservative Episcopal parish, almost twenty years after women first joined the Episcopal clergy, the committee members most opposed to bringing in a female priest were the women.

Gallup polls for many years showed, IIRC, 10-15% of the American electorate was adamantly opposed to voting for a woman for President, including women voters, even if the candidate was of their own party, experienced, well-qualified, had a good temperament, yadda yadda yadda.

Some people, even women, just have a mental image of who should be a preacher or a President - and it’s never going to be a woman. More’s the pity.

No. Someone I know got a vasectomy after his wife couldn’t get a tubal ligation in her early 30s without getting a psychological or psychiatric examination. He just had to sign a few forms and snip.

I do not have a cite but I recall some years ago (a few decades now) where some young girl in Afghanistan (or similar country) was being stoned for going to school or not wearing a hijab or something.

All the people stoning her were other women.

I didn’t get it then. I don’t get it now.

My nephew is a troll, so it’s hard to be sure what he really believes. The fact that he constantly brings up anti feminist bull is very suspicious. The one that he just came up with is that all of Marie Curie’s work was actually Pierre’s.

Tell him to go visit Marie Curie’s tomb. I’ve been there and seen it. Her coffin is lined with lead because she is radioactive. There’s a reason she is radioactive and it is not because her husband did all the work.

My mother was a teacher, world traveler very independent and to her dying day she couldn’t stand the idea of a female Principal. Just couldn’t accept that a female could lead a school as well as a male. Weird to me, but she was born in 1915, so a product of her upbringing I’m sure.

The aforementioned “Women and Children First” policy on ships would be an example of “smart” misogyny in terms of it being a net gain for women, after all more first class men died on the Titanic than third class women.

Although Marie obviously did do the scientific work, it does not follow from the fact that she was harmed by doing the dangerous part of the work.

You may want to read Simone de Beauvoir, The Second Sex, a seminal (pun intended) work on how women’s psychological complicity in oppression is foundational to misogynist cultures.

It is comparatively easy for a man with a darker skin color to imagine himself a white man with all its attendant privileges; it’s another thing entirely for a woman to imagine herself a man, which is the only real model of privilege women have had. Since by and large women prefer to stay women, a model in which they do that and yet are not oppressed in relation to men is an ongoing challenge that has yet to be resolved in any truly satisfying way.

I think just about everything in middle eastern culture fits here. Not educating women, not allowing them to lawfully drive, covering heads, etc. just ridiculous, IMHO.

Yup, if from day zero society is brainwashing you into thinking that your value as a (female) person fundamentally depends on your compliance with socially determined gender roles, and that the very survival of your society depends on the maintenance of those gender roles, then there’s a very good chance that you will be militantly opposed to other women trying to subvert or defy those gender roles.

It’s not only the “oppressor group” that buys into oppressive bigotry. Many if not most of the “oppressed group” buy into at least some of it too, because that’s how systemic societal bigotry works.

Wowza. I hold no brief for patriarchal sexist practices in Middle Eastern cultures, but to say that “just about everything” (emphasis added) in those cultures qualifies as “stupid examples of misogyny” is broad-brushing pretty hard.

Maybe some good news on this front. The woman I trained years ago, is now sort of my boss. That’s fine. We consider each other friends. She now has to do most of the meetings and approve timesheets and stuff though.

It works fine, I sure don’t care. I do what I do. I’m trying to make videos of the 30 years of knowledge that I have in my job. This is pretty critical IMHO. I’m trying to wrap my head around that. I made my first one yesterday. I’ll retire in a couple of years and everyone knows that. I don’t want to leave them hanging.

You might argue that it’s a pointless generalization given the diversity of the region in other respects, but is it inaccurate? What are the exceptions? Israel, Jordan. Algeria if you include the N African countries. Am I missing any other places where you might want your daughter to grow up (discounting non-gender-related factors)?

Incidentally, there are pretty extensive Wikipedia articles entitled “Women In…” for most countries. A bright spot:

The day after the 2016 election, a black friend of mine said the darkest/funniest thing to come out of the Trump years. He said, “Yesterday, I learned that America hates women more than it hates black people and America really hates black people.” Although, his version was unspeakably darker.

That’s a very interesting observation, and I think your friend may be right. Republicans are looking for new slaves.
