From the story: “When officers arrived in the 2400 block of Dawn Court around 6 p.m. Thursday, they encountered Scott Gudmundsen (pictured) – dressed in fatigues and holding two men on the ground at gunpoint, Shaffer said”
Why didn’t the police come screeching into the location and immediately start shooting the guy? How can they “fear for their life” when maybe a person has a weapon, but don’t “fear for their life” when they pull up and a guy has an immediately recognizable gun pointed at people?
Whatever one thinks, in general, about gun rights and gun ownership, it’s clear that many gun rights and gun ownership supporters in America have a strong element of racial bias in their definition of who should get to use a gun for self-defense, and that many police have internalized that bias. This story is just another example of a black person getting arrested for the type of gun use that white people can often engage in with impunity.
George Zimmerman didn’t get arrested on the night that he shot and killed Trayvon Martin. If the cops had arrived and Martin was standing over Zimmerman’s body with a gun, and with an identical story, there’s no way that Martin wouldn’t have been arrested, IMO.
Arrested? I hate to say it (I know a number of police officers and believe they are ‘good’ ones), but I think the odds are good that there would have been two dead instead of just one.
74-year-old woman killed by “celebratory gunfire” on 4th of July.
“Last night as people throughout Durham peacefully celebrated the July 4th holiday with their friends and family, a small few chose to put our community at risk by carelessly firing guns into the air,” said Durham Police Chief, Cerelyn J. Davis. “This reckless behavior led to the tragic death of Ms. Paulette Thorpe. Ms. Thorpe’s death reminds us that we as a community must work together to prevent these senseless acts, so that no family suffers such a tragedy ever again.”
Louisville police confirmed three people were injured due to the “discharge of someone’s gun” as members of the “Not Fucking Around Coalition,” an all-Black militia, gathered in Baxter Park shortly before 1 p.m.
…
The “Three Percenter” far-right militia group also called on members to be present on Saturday to act as an ad-hoc security force during the rally. The group is known for its support of gun rights and opposition to government “tyranny,” and for its presence at white supremacist rallies like Unite the Right in Charlottesville.
I thinks its more that guns make stupid people news worthy (and dangerous).
Smart person with gun, sits and home with gun locked up and no one cares.
Stupid person without gun, sits and home and does stupid things that nobody notices.
Stupid person with gun makes headlines.
Investigators said the 29-year-old man was waiting in the checkout line, when he unholstered his Glock 9mm semi-automatic pistol from his waistband “so that he could show it off to a friend.”
As the man put the gun back in the front of his pants, he accidentally pulled the trigger, according to police.
Moron. Article doesn’t specify whether he rendered himself unable to reproduce, but one can only hope.
Idaho man arrested for assault after brandishing a handgun in a haunted house. Thank goodness nobody was harmed in this exercise of 2A rights. Idaho permits open carry and concealed carry without a permit. Unable to determine if his possession of the gun was legal.
This is what happens when anybody can carry a gun–you get angry drunks walking around with guns.
If you watch the video of the situation, the guy is surprisingly, not the complete idiot you’d think from the headline. Yeah, he pulled a gun on a bunch of kids, which is stupid, but it was the kids who were being the assholes up to that point. It’s easy to see how this guy might have felt overrun by the situation.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m against people carrying guns in public. And if you can’t handle having a bunch of teenagers yelling at you, you probably shouldn’t have a gun at all.
