Another article says, “…a stolen handgun that was found to have ‘been converted to a weapon capable of automatic gunfire,’ police said.” I suspect the “machine gun” term may be a quote from the law he was arrested under and is probably broadly interpreted to mean “fully automatic weapon.”
Yes, full automatics, conversions to full automatic, and the parts used for such conversions (actual working parts of the action, not bump stocks) are treated in the law as “machine guns” or parts thereof.
And under federal law you can lawfully own a full automatic if your state allows it. Just that the paperwork, licensing and fee hurdles are steeper, it does require registration, and legal full autos are damn expensive.
Oh, great. In the video, they modified a Glock 17 in under 2 minutes with a part the size of a LEGO and it went full automatic. The Glock 17 is the gun Tommy Lee Jones told RDjr to get in the second Fugitive movie, so there are a lot of them out there in bedroom closets. Granted, many gun stores say the Glock is the most returned handgun in the US because it has no safety. “This gun has no safety; are you insane? I want a refund…”
On the bright side (yay… /s) the idiots who use these blow through all of their ammo in about 5 seconds ( two bursts?) so the LEOs can take them out while they are reloading. Also, the Glock really is a polymer/plastic gun and really is not not designed for the kind of heat generated by firing huge numbers of bullets at machine gun speeds.
If videos on YouTube can show an AK47 getting so hot that it’s wooden stocks burst into flame, I’m guessing that if 3-4 drum magazines are run through a Glock 17, that it will start to melt and possibly explode molten plastic and metal into the face of the shooter.
Yet, the gun enthusiasts are always wanting to change that. The first time I head of an auto sear was on this board where a poster was complaining that a part was criminalized, even if it wasn’t in a gun.
Yet Another kid-on-kid killing (YAKKK). 2-yr-old finda gun, shoots 4-yr-old sister. In car at gas station, while someone (Daddy?) was gassing up.
“Accidentally” my ass.

Oh, wonderful. Almost 1300 rounds, huh? Congratulations.
Technology has let the genie out of the bottle and she’s all set to shoot us in the ass…
Glock manufactures and sells fully automatic pistols. I doubt they would do that if they melt and blow up after a short bit of usage.
“88 Industries LLC” – how subtle
According to the website:
Disclaim without explaining what you’re disclaiming… Sure, I buy it…
I’ll note that he is by no means the first to pretend that 88 is a reference to Earnhardt. Same with assholes claiming 14 is Tony Stewart. Suuuure, you just HAPPENED to pick 14 and 88 as digits on your vanity license plate…
Lots of stupidity here. Shooting at each other while wearing “a form of body armor” (I’m wondering if that body armor happened to be a pot-bellied stove door or, better yet, really thick pillows held in place by duct tape), and lying to the police.
In short: Florida Men!
Even proper body armor is going to be sketchy with 5 shots at close range
Yeah, I remember one episode of Mythbusters where Adam was complaining that “bullet-proof” does not actually mean “bullet-proof”.
FAFO, they did.
Lots of people market junk that they call bullet proof. A 30 second search and I found these little beauties:
Bullet Proof hoodies. (!)
Now, just how stupid do you have to be as to think that hoodies and windbreakers can be made magically bulletproof? That requires heavy plates ( sometimes 2-3 depending on what you’re facing.).
But kids are stupid; they don’t know that…
"Buh… buh… it said on the package… " < bleeds out >
Well, I suppose it would depend on the bullet. And it would certainly be 100% effective against bullets you don’t let your “friends” fire at you.
Not very stupid, considering that bullet proof clothing is a real thing that actually works. They come with some caveats; likely only good for smaller calibre, lower velocity weapons, and it will hurt very very badly since there’s not very much padding. There’s plenty of videos of demonstrations online; here’s one in which the hoodie resists a .22, 9mm, .38 special, .357 magnum, buck shot, slug, and desert eagle (.50 ae), but fails when shot by a 5.7 x 28 round.
