I don’t what I did to make this little problem as sticky as it is, but all my Win 98 directory lists shown via the “browse” and “run” etc. commands sort file and directory lists Z-A rather than A-Z. Forcing an A-Z re-sort in these lists lasts only as long as the window is open and it resets to Z-A the next time it opens.
Windows explorer sorts the lists properly. It’s these lists within the various browse functions of windows I’m having problems with.
It’s somewhat frustrating because I’m pretty familar with windows and have never had this “sticky-sort” problem before. I’ve poked around a bit in setup dialogs but nothing I do to re-set the sort order “sticks”. Any help appreciated.
Try this:
In an Explorer window, go to “View” then “Folder options” then “View” again. You can do a lot of stuff there that might fix your problem, but the one I’d try is toggling “Remember each folder’s view settings” (i.e., if it’s off, turn it on, if it’s on, turn it off).
See if that does it, if not, try setting up a window to be the way you want it to be and then use that “Like current folder” button.
Thanks for the suggestion but I had played around with
that setup area as well and no amount of resetting to defaults or other tweaks in that section had the slightest effect. Browse and run commands still sort Z-A on opening.
I’m thinking there’s got to a switch for this somewhere or
(sigh) some software I installed in the last month or re-set the registry for Z-A sort defaults.
Although an infinite level of wisdom and intelligence is always present at the SDMB, you might want to try the boards at http://www.annoyances.org. Half of the site is for Windows 98 and the other for Windows 95. The mods and regulars to the board know just about anything and everything regarding Winprobs, especially those freaky-freaky ones like the one you are having. Give them a try . .
