Stupid problem trying to upgrade DVD drive firmware.

Running windows XP.

I’m having a really stupid and frustrating problem trying to update the firmware to my DVD drive. Here is the Samsung page with the firmware. Clicking on the 'One Click Firmware Upgrade Method" (actually “Mothod” but this is irrelevant at the moment) brings up a pop up which shows you what running it should look like. First the application window comes up and then in the foreground is a “caution” window which has an “OK” button which you press to run it. Only problem is, on my computer that caution window seems to be cut off so I can’t get to the “OK” button, nor can I even X it out. The only way to even close it is from the task manager.

Here’s a video to show you what I mean:

Am I stupid or is Samsung? Any ideas?

Since you can select the window, it might be possible to Tab to the OK button and select it with Enter. It’s a bit hard to know how many buttons there are in the invisible part, but I guess worst case scenario is you’ll cancel the installation and then you’ll know you need to Tab one more time.

Nope. Tried it. I see no way to get the cursor in that window.

That’s odd, it generally works with the standard grey buttons even if they aren’t visible on screen. Have you tried changing the desktop resolution and colour depth, by the way? It seems to me that it’s probably a rendering bug or something similar, so updating the graphics driver may also help.

<nevermind. Didn’t watch the video, and misunderstood.>

Okay, let me try this. First off, try switching your theme to Windows Classic mode (in the Display Control Panel > Themes or Appearance). If that is insufficient, try monkeying with the DPI settings, if you don’t mind restarting your computer a few times. It’s in the Display Control Panel > Settings > Advanced > General.

But if you’re going to restart anyways, try booting in Safe mode, which will use the default video driver, and maybe get you around the rendering problem. If that doesn’t work, then try the DPI settings in Normal mode.

Ditto.
If this fails you could always use ‘Alt’ then ‘Tab’ to get the OK button to highlight then hit enter. If you can’t see it you may have to guess when you’re on it but if there’s only 2 options you figure it out in one or two attempts.:slight_smile:

Alt TAB didn’t work. Classic view didn’t work, nor did screen resolution changes,

BUT… DPI settings did it!!

Thanks!
