That, to me, is easy. There is abundant evidence that vaccines are a boon to society.
But what do you do with the person who says there should be no welfare because it encourages laziness? Or someone who feels Ayn Rand’s philosophy (Objectivism) is what we should all follow? Or someone who thinks the races should be separate?
What if you are a mother of a child shot at Sandy Hook Elementary School and someone wants to speak in the school gymnasium to promote guns?
It depends which side of the equation you’re on. America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand et al only exist because of Imperialism. It wasn’t all tea and cricket and a jolly good time for everyone - I readily acknowledge that - but the revisionist view that was an oppression-tastic tourism package for sadistic Europeans is not correct either.
A Whack-A-Mole notes, Social Justice Warriors are indeed a thing, much as “Liberals”, “Greenies”, “Religious Fundies” and “Conservatives” are a thing.
No, he was gotten rid of for suggesting (apparently in seriousness) that transgender people be fed through jet engines for corrupting America’s youth. I’m anti-SJW bullshit but even I think he went far, far too far there and don’t see a problem with him getting banned as a resilt
Having opinions you don’t like doesn’t make the other person a bigot.
This is not entirely accurate. Derek received four warnings before his banning, and only the last of them involved any sort of threat of violence. Two of his previous warnings (including the one that led directly to his one month suspension) were for using anti-trans slurs. So, BigT is correct when he says that Derek was banned for transphobia.
This is exactly what I meant by saying we all have lines we draw. I, for example, would not object to the person talking about welfare, Rand, or guns, but I would have a huge objection to the racist and would not allow them a venue if I had any say.
We all have lines, so just to say (this is not what you said, but what others claim) that it’s unreasonable and horrible and ghastly to shout people down is simply wrong. It completely depends on what those people are saying. If someone wants to come to my school and talk about putting trans folk into propellers, I want that person run out of town on a figurative rail.
I try and treat everyone the way I’d like to be treated. That’s all well and good in theory, but it doesn’t work as well in practice because often the way I’m OK with being treated is different to what other people are OK with. In the linked example, I don’t think there’s an outcry worthy problem as long as the promoter hasn’t gone out of their way to avoid getting any bands with women in them or anything like that.
I know we have… markedly different opinions on the subject, but there’s a number of excellent books on the British Empire, including some revisionist works, some pro-Empire and some relatively neutral on the subject which I’d encourage you to read - I’m happy to offer some suggested titles if you like.
In return, I’d be happy for some recommendations on books about the South African pre-Apartheid era experience for non-Europeans and some other books on the British Empire from the perspective of an African or an Indian, particularly the “average” person, if that makes sense.
Again, I’m not sure if this is a good parallel for the Peterson situation. If it’s my living room, it’s my rules. I’ll forbid anyone from saying anything for any reason I feel like. The students who gatecrashed Peterson’s talk didn’t own that space, they just acted like they did.
jsgoddess may have fruitful conversations with everyone else, but her posts to me are nothing but snark. She clearly decided a long time ago that I was beneath contempt and she’s not going to change her mind any time soon. What’s the point of having an ignore function if you can’t use it to block people who are just trolling you?
I’m fully aware of the history of the British Empire, thanks for the offer.
Not really here to educate some asshole I already know from past experience has his tongue so far up Britannia’s butthole that he’s tasting her tonsils, thanks.
I’m sure that as a Jew I’d be delighted and not insulted if someone kindly offered to “educate” me about the sins of global Jewry… Or maybe I’d be a little piqued.
Also, MrDibble and I have well-established diametrically opposing views on the subject of the British Empire. I would actually like to read more about it from a Non-British perspective, though.
