I keep clicking the buttons, closing/reopening, whatever, and I can’t kill this beast.
Is there a secret command?
A cookie is likely messed up. First restart your browser (not just the tab or window with YouTube in it). If that doesn’t work, clear your cookies.
Anything more than that, and you’re looking at a deeper problem. Then I would suggest uninstalling and reinstalling your browser. This may not be possible with Internet Explorer, though, so safe mode will have to do.
I’m using Opera. I’ll see what happens in Chrome and Firefox.

Did you try any of the other stuff I mentioned? You should be able to get Opera to work properly. A bug like the one you are experiencing would be reported all over the place if it was inherent to the browser.
Opera has an advanced tool for deleting cookies by site - I tried that.
OK, I cleared all cookies using the tip you linked. Both problems persist.
