All of a sudden I can’t play anything on YouTube. I use Firefox as a browser. I get a screen that says: “Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe’s Flash Player. Get the latest Flash player.”
Well, Java is turned, so I downloaded the newer flash player.
Still nothing. I get the same message.
Strange thing is, if I switch to Internet Explorer, I have no problems. But I don’t want to use IE just because one web site is being a pain in the nuts.
Have you installed any new addons to Firefox recently? NoScript and any addon that switches the in-browser player to Flow Player require a bit of configuration before they work properly. Failing that, have you upgraded either Firefox or your version of Windows Media Player recently? In either event, you might have to re-download the Media Player plugin for things to work properly.
Am I the only one who is having trouble with Youtube and Safari? Firefox works fine, but for several weeks if not months Safari has been unable to videos from Youtube or any other Flash videos. I reported it as a bug to Apple.
ETA: Actually no, sorry, I was having a different problem, but I’ll leave what I wrote in case it helps…
Have you closed and restarted Firefox? This has happened to me a couple times the last few weeks, and that’s fixed it. (I don’t think I had to restart Windows, but I couldn’t swear to it.)
If you’re using Firefox 1.x or 2.x, you might have to wait for a minute or two for Firefox to fully unload, particularly if it’s been loaded for a few days – use Task Manager to see that the process has actually ended. I haven’t tried the 3.0 beta yet, but I understand that they’ve squashed many of the worst memory leaks, which will make a huge difference in shutting Firefox down.
I’ve been having the same problem the OP mentioned. Unfortunately, I’m computer illiterate and most of the posts in this thread are incomprehensible to me. I am sure that I haven’t made any changes in either Windows or Firefox, unless it was done automatically without my knowledge.
ZenBeam’s post seems to suggest that closing and restarting Firefox might fix the problem. How do I do that?
Simply close it the way you normally would (click x in upper right corner) and restart the application by double-clicking the icon on your desktop, or however you normally start.
Having said that I’m using Firefox and not having any problems, it doesn’t appear to be related to any recent updates.
Looking into it a little further, I don’t think I’m even using Firefox. I use Netscape 7.2 - isn’t that my internet browser? In either event, I shut off my computer and restart it every day so that isn’t a solution. If I try downloading this Flash player update they’re suggesting will there be any drawbacks?
Try uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox and Flash in that order. Be sure Firefox is closed when installing Flash but do be suer to get it through the Mozzila Addons page.
Firefox 3 is great but the extensions haven’t caught up with it yet.
Safari is working OK with Flash but YouTube is somewhat hitty-missy this week, some clips take forever to load, others are OK.
There was a Microsoft Update last week that messed my machines up for a few days, perhaps a Microsoft update is responsible for the problems. Wouldn’t be the first time.
