Subnautica - what is it like?

I ordered a new gaming laptop that I think can run this game(I mean, most likely, anyway).

I LOVE Breath of the Wild and I have played all the Elder Scrolls and Fallout games(except, oddly, Fallout 4).

Is Subnautica like those games?

I should add that I already own Subnautica, having received a free copy about 18 months ago. I have never had a PC that can run it as my computer is from 2012 and has no dedicated video card.

It’s nothing like Fallout or Elder Scrolls, except inasmuch as those games have exploration.

It’s exactly like Minecraft, except:
-It’s the most beautiful game I’ve ever played.
-If Minecraft never let you get a weapon much better than a steak knife, but pitted you against sea dragons.
-If Minecraft had a clear storyline.
-If Minecraft were 95% underwater.

Okay, so maybe it’s not really like Minecraft at all, except:
-Exploration is a big part of the game
-Crafting, and building a base, are big parts of the game.

Subnautica stays at the top of my favorite games I’ve ever played, and I envy you the opportunity to play it with fresh eyes!

It’s more of a survival game like ARK or Rust, with a tighter story than most of them have, and much, MUCH prettier.

Subnautica is one of those games where if you offered me the opportunity to completely erase my memory of playing it I would take you up on the offer in a heartbeat, just for the opportunity to play it fresh again.

Don’t ask, just play it.

One of the things I like about Breath of the Wild is that I can play it with my kids watching. Is Subnautica kid-friendly for watching?

There are some parts in it that are scary, like, HOLY SHIT you might need to change pants scary. Not gory, not body horror, but scary as hell. If your kids can deal with that, I don’t think there’s anything to worry about.

If that’s a problem, there are places in the game that you can hang out and the kids iwll be fine.

My kids watched me playing it a lot and I haven’t received any calls from DSS yet.

I am probably fine with it. I would have played Fallout 4, but having played Fallout 1-3 and New Vegas, I presume it has tons of over the top violence, swearing, and sexual content.

Now Breath of the Wild has violence, but it is manageable. No swearing or sexual content.

My hope is Subnautica is a good exploration game that maintains a PG level for the most part, occasionally dipping into PG-13 or so.

:shrugs:

I heard that Horizon Zero Dawn is coming out for PC at some point. I have no idea if my new PC will be able to play that, but I have heard that is Breath of the Wild like in some ways too.

Note: I even own Witcher 3(game of the year, I think), but I have heard that game is MASSIVELY inappropriate for my kids to watch me play.

It never goes beyond PG-13, and unless your kids are under 5, I think it’d probably be fine for them. The only cussing that they’ll hear will be from you when spoiler spoiler spoiler.

Uh, yeah. Unless you’d watch Game of Thrones with your kids, don’t play Witcher with them around. And if you would watch Game of Thrones with your kids, I’m not letting you babysit.

Noted and as I figured.

Anyway, I am hopeful Subnautica will play on my new computer. It’s been on my list since the original thread on the Dope went around and then that free copy went out to everyone who claimed it.

I played Subnautica with my 5-year-old daughter watching. She loved seeing all the fish and how pretty everything was. She jumped and screamed at some of the scary parts (jump scares) but in a giggly, fun way. It’s fine for kids.

Cool, glad to hear it.

It’s like no other game I’ve ever played, and I have played a LOT of games. One of the best and most original games of the last ten years.

Great, very hopeful. I imagine a lot of issues have been fixed two years on from its release. I heard it was buggy even on version 1.0.

It’s one of those games you start playing, then eventually look up and realize it’s dark out and it’s like 4AM.

Subnautica is a perfect game in that it does exactly what it is trying to do.

Which is why I gave it up. I don’t like large amounts of tension in my entertainment, and Subnautica builds tension so well. Too well.

The first time I

took the earliest submarine into the abandoned base and nearly ran out of oxygen because I couldn’t find my way back up and the whole time was certain that something was going to jump out of the darkness and eat me

I went ahead and realized it wasn’t my cup of tea.

Gorgeous game. Tight controls. Definitely play it.

How does it compare - if anyone but remembers this one - Endless Ocean for the Wii.

I absolutely adored Endless Ocean and could play it for days on end. You just swam around as a diver and explored finding fish and other undersea life and learning about them and their behavior. There was a storyline about finding a new species but you didn’t have to do it.

Fallout 4 is awesome. Buy the full, game-of-the-year version next time its on sale, I highly doubt you’ll regret it.

Subnautica is awesome as well. I finished after about 100 hours. It’s a bit shallow (pun intended). They have fantastic structures and threadbare, skeletal plots to put in them - but that’s not really the point of the game. The point is discovery: just to explore and enjoy the environment they created. The plot is just a device to facilitate that. At some points, it’s a little dangerous to get lost in the cool sights, which frustrated me at times, but it’s a beautiful game. Maybe I’ll play on creative mode sometime.

I’ll probably get the sequel next time it’s on sale.

I went into No Man’s Sky next, and I’d describe that as a similar game to Subnautica, but with a different setting. If you like Subnautica, No Man’s Sky might appeal.

I’m enjoying the hell out of Elder Scrolls Online now. It’s free-to-play on steam for another day, I think. There’s a big sale on content packs until the 15th, which I’ll be buying today. Lot of content, beautiful game.

Similarly, Astroneer. It’s not nearly as deep; it’s a much, much simpler game, very much a sandbox game. There’s little to no story, you just explore and build. It’s more fun than it sounds like.

I have GOTY version already. I just need to find time to play it without my kids around. I would prefer a more PG-13 version of it.
