I have a queen size mattress that I’ve been using in a water bed frame and so have not needed and did not buy a box spring. Now I want to dump the wb frame and set the bed up on a regular frame. I still don’t want a box spring. This mattress has a wood frame and cannot be turned over, so maybe it can be used without a box spring. Is that possible?
Years ago I had a king size mattress that for support had two plywood boxes covered with the same fabric as the mattress. The whole thing sat right on the floor.
I don’t know how to search on line for what I want because I can’t think how to reduce it to a few search terms. Do y’all know what I’m talking about? Is this something I will be able to find in a mattress store, that is, a box to set the mattress on? Or maybe those old-timey wooden slats that supported the mattress? Even I’m not making sense to me. Must sleep.
Sounds like what you want is a platform bed. I don’t know if you want to spend the money on them, but I believe they CAN be inexpensive, I just haven’t seen any for sale in a store. Hell, I haven’t seen them in a store; I’m in the middle of nowhere, and it’s not something walmart sells, lol.
Ok, here’s an example: 135+ free shipping. I suspect you’re looking for something a little more temporary, but hey, it’s a whole bed frame, <doh, the headboard is separate, but still> and a nice looking one. Might be worth it. http://www.cymax.com/South-Shore-3070-23X-Lexington-Platform-Bed.htm
I’ve never heard of a mattress with wooden sides, but for a normal mattress Ikea slat bed frames work relatively well. If you go this route, make sure you do a good job putting your bed together- it’s not very much fun when the slats drop at night.
you could use any frame for a box spring and put 1/2 inch plywood on the slats that the box spring would go on. this would leave you lower by the height of the box spring mattress.
I like my steel bed frame. It works like a platform bed without the slats, just assemble and set the mattress on top of it. It’s easy to put together yourself, no tools needed. It comes with wingnuts that you tighten by hand and sets up in under 30 minutes. I got the queen/king frame, so it comes with optional expanders if you want to upgrade to a king someday. And the box it comes in is very compact.
Sure, I hope it works out for you. My mom got the same frame on my recommendation and both are holding up perfectly well. Just add a bedskirt and boom.
