At Grand Teton National Park, where buffalo run free within the park, and are raised commercially by local ranchers, the restaurants serve buffalo meat.
But I just couldn’t bring myself to order it, because , well, there’s no word for it.
They’ll all run, calling “Wildfire!”

They usually call buffalo “bison.” It sounds fancier. It’s pretty popular, for those who want to spend quite a bit more money for healthier cow. Even Walmart carries ground bison!

Yes, I can read the binomial name. But show the picture to 20 Americans a picture of the animal (who at least know what it looks like), and 19 will probably call it a “buffalo.”
Nope, if you’re going to use the Spanish name it’s potro, at least in Spain (colt, as that’s what usually gets sacrificed for it; we also differentiate our “cow-et-al meat” by whether it’s calf, cow, bull or ox).

I scoured the foreign versions of the Wiki page on horses for a catchy name, and I hereby suggest: Вӧв. That’s what they call it in Komi, a Russian language, apparently. Bob is catchy, and it has heavy-metal umlauts. Win.
