Suggest me a career...

Hi, I hate my job, I’m 26 years old and have been working in construction for the past… (oh god…) five years and I’m sick of it. I need a new career. This is where you guys come in, I’ve had little luck deciding on something thats right for me and I’m hoping that the mother of all miracles awaits me on Straight Dope.

Some clues to match to an occupation…

fast typist, 88wpm, very computer-intuitive, dislikes math (but got high marks), loves to read (fast reader), loves music (over 400 cd), loves movies (over 200 dvds). I’m a fairly independent-minded guy so I like working with as few people as possible around (current job has me around wayyy too many people and I just need a break). I’ve been told I write very well, creatively and technically (when I try, anyways) and after high school I flirted with the idea of becoming a journalist but didnt like the job insecurity. I graduated from graphic design in 1997, and after a few jobs (very very low paying ones) I decided I couldnt make a decent living doing that (wasnt very good at designing, just typesetting). So now I’m employed in a job that pays well, but is NOT something I want to do the rest of my life.

Other than the porn business, can anyone think of something that could match my qualifications? Also, the best job I’ve ever had was when I was doing hydrotesting (iron pipes) before I got into construction. It was monotonous, assembly-line work that paid very well, and I actually enjoyed doing it because I was operating this Trekkie-like console where I’d move a big ass pipe onto a rack, hydrotest it, and send it on its way, rinse, repeat. I was very good at that job, but unfortunately I got laid off (with everyone else) 4 months later and the company shut down. So I got into construction and five years later, here I am.

I apologize for the lengthly monologue, but I’m hoping that someone, somewhere will go “hey, that guy would be perfect as a janitor!” and I can research this career, etc.

Thanks in advance you guys, your replies mean a lot.

There’s a lot of job insecurity everywhere, not just in journalism.

Fast reading + fairly fast typing? Become a novelist. (Unless money is important, in which case, become a screenwriter.)

Novelist–you get to work alone
Screenwriter–you are part of a committee, and most of the committee feels you are the least important part

No . . . I think you sound like a novelist. Keep the high-paying construction job, it sounds like it engages a different part of your brain and therefore won’t burn out the same part you’d use for writing a novel. Tap into your high-tech fantasies, and add a love element–that always makes a story better.
