Insurmountable? No. But i rarely have access to my streaming service info handy when I’m on the dope, so it’s considerable effort, and it does affect how interested i am in discussion about the show.
Try to look for the tags, I do tag most of the shows. Probably over 90% would be my guestimate.
That’s fine. But what would prevent you from making a note of the show’s name and seeing if you have it available next time you turn on your TV (or have your computer available to search - which you likely have if you are on the Dope)?
This show had numerous big write-ups in the paper, and the TV menu we received showed it prominently. I was aware of it, and I tend to be pretty clueless about current shows. I guess I presumed most folk minimally interested in a TV discussion would have access to at least the level of info I had.
I’m likely more clueless than most, but I don’t really think of shows in terms of what platform they are on. But - like I said, I’ll try to remember to include the info (if I remember). And - as I’ve said before - tags are invisible to me. Tho I apreciate your effort WE.
Big write ups in the paper might make me more aware of the show, but probably not where it is streaming. I don’t know what a “TV menu” is. I have a channel guide that shows DirecTV shows but it wouldn’t include streaming services.
ETA: Tags are also invisible to me, but I’m going to put more effort into noticing them and see how that works out.
Just to clarify, the invisible part isn’t an issue with the Discourse Interface (or skin) but just, you don’t look for it?
Very understandable, but if actually invisible, I might need to bump this up to Discourse Tech support.
That’s what I meant, and I assume Dinsdale too. It’s not somewhere I look when I open a thread. I just don’t notice tags. As I stated, I’m going to try.
Uh. I want to know right now if I’m interested in reading this thread or not? And i suppose i could search on my phone (which is how i interact with the dope 90% of the time) but a simple search will probably tell me who stars in it, not whether i can watch it or not.
It’s probably relevant that i DON’T have a lot of the services that shows are on, so it’s generally a pleasant surprise if i do have access to a show that people like.
Fine - I’m so ignorant that I don’t even know what to call the screen that appears on my TV allowing me to choose between Netflix, Amazon, etc… If not a menu, what should I call that screen? Yet I’m supposed to provide correct info to allow every poster to understand how to locate it on their device?
And when I say “invisible” - I was not necessarily being literal. Whether the info does or does not appear on my screen, I do not “see” it in the manner that I use the Dope. Which is sufficient for my preferences/purposes. And, if it is NOT literally visible, I’m not interested in figuring how to adjust my settings or something to make it so.
I’m able to waste plenty of time on the Dope w/o paying any attention to tags.
The thread will be there tomorrow!
And - maybe - if the thread sounds interesting enough, you might consider a short term subscription.
Oh, that screen. I think menu works, or “home screen” perhaps. Mine tends to be a cluttered mess like the Huffington Post website, so I go the the service I want as soon as I can get there. I think you are right that they do feature some shows, but do they tell you which service they’re on? [I just turned on the TV in my office to check and went to the home menu screen. They have things like “featured” and “Trending” movies, but you have to click on one to see which service it is, and then you get a prompt to go to Prime Video or Netflix or whatever.]
We’ve got an Apple+, and over a year in, neither my wife nor I have really mastered the remote, nor does it seem to consistently show/move between “home” screens. In contrast, our Comcast Infinity remote was impressively intuitive and easy to use for both of us. I consistently muse over the idea that Apple products are supposed to be intuitive, because they surely aren’t for me.
At the moment, we get Netflix, Amazon, and Apple. In the past, we have seen shows that are supposedly on one of those platforms, but when we try to get it on or TV, it is unavailable or costs extra.
We are not too demanding in our TV viewing. There generally seems to be enough available that is good enough for our viewing wants. We don’t get too involved in whether or not we can access as specific show.
Thanks to the wonders of Discourse, the thread will disappear and be hard to find if i read it today. (Unless there’s new content). And good grief, if i subscribed to a streaming service every time i read about an interesting show, I’d spend all my time subscribing and cancelling services. Or spend all my money subscribed to lots of them.
It’s not a huge deal, of course. It’s just one thread. And maybe I’ll even remember the name of the show. (But my verbal memory sucks, so i may not.) I wouldn’t have started this thread. But I’ll enthusiastic endorse, “if you think i might like watching this show, try to tell me where i might find it.”
As I view this thread on my laptop using Firefox browser, there are no tags visible to me, nor any on-screen button to “show tags”.
So the discussion of tags is not helpful.
Can you tell me what interface you’re using?
The tags should be visible on all of the interfaces.
As far as the tag button, it is on the hamburger menu. The button with 3 parallel lines between the magnifying glass and the user icon button. This is in the upper right hand corner. Tags is the last item in the second column.
If you look at just Cafe Society, you should see almost every thread has a tag on it.
Once you’re in a thread, right under the title of thread it should say Cafe Society then the tags. In the example I’m linking it reads
Cafe Society movies disney-hulu
but in a grey.
We knew it was coming, but now we know its title, and some of its content, because here is the trailer for the new Indiana Jones movie, out June 30th. [Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny | Official Trailer]

I think of it - I’ll try to include platform info in any future threads.
That was really all I was looking for when I started this thread - if people are generally in the habit of including the platform, that seems like a small courtesy that many people will appreciate. And sure, no biggie if anyone forgets.

guess I didn’t think it required insurmountable effort for someone to check whether they had access to a show on whatever service they use.
It’s not “insurmountable,” just mildly disruptive. The thing is, I don’t want to get interested in a show I’m not going to be able to watch, so BEFORE I read the thread, I need to stop and look where the show in question is streaming, to figure out if I want to keep reading or not.
ETA: I see @puzzlegal made the same point already. And as to the “thread will be there tomorrow” - sure, but I may not have time to read it tomorrow, or I may forget to go back to it.

Good info and well presented. Very clear and easily accessible, even to this tech daft geezer. Thank you.

I really want to love and use tags, but i don’t. Yeah, if i look for them i can see them. But…I usually don’t notice them.
I don’t really see them at all unless pointed out for some reason. I generally already know which forum I’m in, so I think I mentally skip over the “Forum Name” line and thus don’t even see the tags.
For me, personally, I’d probably need them brightly highlighted on the page to start seeing them without effort. And that would be garish on this forum. Maybe a more noticeable color text besides gray?
Maybe we can make a request. Though with 9 Themes, I’m not sure how it would be met. I would like a easier to read color than lightish grey.
I could run the request to the Modloop if it would help. Ed Zotti is generally the only contact to the tech support team.

In lieu of a color change: Larger text – on a separate line from the forum name – could be helpful, as well.
Anyway it goes, it is 9 changes. A little larger and black would be a big help.
