Summarize Lost

I saw about the first 20 minutes of the first episode of Lost (ie. I saw the plane crash). I had to stop watching the tape and my wife taped over the rest.

Since then I’ve only seen the last 2 episodes (the ones that focused on Charlie and Sawyer).

So could someone summarize what has happened so far.

What’s the deal with the monster?
What’s the deal with the boadcast?

Anything else that might help.
