We’ve rented a houseboat for a week. (55 ft, 4 cabins, waterslide, hot tub, etc.) Will spend the week anchored somewhere. We’re “pullin” (heh heh) our little boat behind it so we can ski, etc. after we arrive.
'Nuther week, both kids are at camp :). MizP and I are taking the RV somewhere (don’t know where yet, don’t really care).
Short week (only 5 days) I’m taking the kids camping/waterskiing. Although I’ve expressed my sympathy for MizP (who isn’t going) she assures me that between the jacuzzi, some good wine, and Aragorn on DVD; she’ll survive the time alone somehow.
Pullin
PS. to Jonathan Chance… we went to the Tortugas and snorkeled a few years ago. It was one of the best parts of a great vacation.
In May, we went north to Canada and killed many small finny creatures. Saw deer, bald eagles, crows, pigeons(???), otters and a small bear. Much fish, beer and sun was enjoyed by all.
Next weekend, I’m going backpacking for the weekend.
I’m trying to put together a canoe trip for later this summer.
For the past 20+ years, my family has gone to visit the same small town in Maine, for two weeks, and stay in the same house. When I say family I mean extended family - up to 20 of us in the same house. 5 generations of my family have come to this town to vacation - my grandparents actually met there - and their ashes are sprinkled in a pine grove in town.
It’s the highlight of the year - always. We drive into town (7 hour drive from my parents’ house - so getting there is always extra special!) - lift your feet as you cross the train tracks - say hi to grandpa in the pine grove (see above)!
No tv - no phone - no computer (natch). House is rather run-down - only house I’ve ever seen with a wooden fire escape - yep, real safe. But we love it anyway. Shuffleboard courts right next to the house. Library across the street - tennis courts & church across the other street. Short walk to the beach - be sure to stop at the variety store to pick up penny candy!
Set up the wind screen on the beach - we want to play cards. Hey - the water is warm (yeah, right - like we’d fall for THAT one)! Hmm, we’ve been at the beach for 5 hours - time to go home, and have a meal. Aunt Kathie’s meat loaf - best in town! And breakfast is Uncle Jack’s french toast - the smell wafts in the morning.
My generation was the kids when we started going - and although we are now kids with our own kids, we are still at the kids table - and that’s fine with us! It’s getting a bit crowded now, though.
I could make this post much, much longer - 20+ years of memories will do that! But now, I’m just waiting (very impatiently!) for the vacation to come.
