What are your vacation plans? Going to the mountains for a hike? Got a cabin in the woods? How 'bout a place at the beach? Driving across country to see Wally World?
There’s an interesting article in the WP today about Americans and vacations, the gist of which is that Americans are taking fewer and fewer days off (damn Puritanical work ethic and corporate downsizing).
Susan gave me a surprise 4 day trip to St. Martin for my birthday, and we’re going to my parents’ beach house at Sandbridge for a week at the end of July. Perhaps a few long weekends in August.
Now, let’s see…I’ll need my towel, cooler, hat, and some seriously trashy reading material. I travel very light.
Mine will just be a four-day weekend. We’re going to my dad’s cabin in northern Minnesota with some friends. Our days will be spent sitting by the lake and drinking beer, sitting in the lake and drinking beer, fishing, swimming, sleeping, reading, etc. Our evenings will be spent at a music festival 30 miles away, where we’ll sit around and drink more beer. Later in the evening we’ll have a campfire … mmm … s’mores!
It’s tough here in Australia. All I get is 4 weeks recreation leave a year, 2 weeks long service leave, 4 weeks sick leave, 10 public holidays and 24 flex days (I have to make up the hours).
You asked for it…you got. *first of all being in my profession I have each summer off, it’s nice to not have to teach summer session
I’m taking this out as much as I can, probably end up here several times.
Otherwise, we are going to Florida to see Mickey and do some fishing, Arizona to Hike and maybe do some hang gliding (my wife won’t though…she doesn’t like the heights) and generally bum around all summer. Usually,I’m teaching this year I’m not teaching summer session.
But I can usually be found down at the slip with a beer in hand philosophizing with who ever is docked next to us.
Thanks for the thread Plnner - get’s me more excited for our plans! Maybe a Connecticut Dopefest will finally happen this year!
Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, starting on Thursday for a week and a half. This is my forst “real” vacation (i.e., not involving visiting family) in years.
I’ll be scouting ballplayers in my spare time, so beware, SDMB Fantasy League owners. I expect to uncover the next Sammy and Pedro for next year.
We leave Wednesday morning for South Dakota- going to Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Deadwood, Custer State Park. First family road trip!
We’ll probably do another road trip in August- up north somewhere, maybe the arrowhead region or even Canada.
Otherwise, we spend pretty much every weekend up at our cabin NW of Minneapolis about an hour. LilMiss fishes, I kick back and read. Much cribbage and dominoes ensues along with lunches and dinners from the barbeque.
I took my vacation in March: spent a week at Disney World with my parents and family.
In July I’m taking a four-day weekend and flying back to New York so Gunslinger and I can attend and photograph my sister’s wedding.
That’s really about it. I work a full-time retail job, and although my company is more generous than some when it comes to vacation time (you can accrue two full weeks a year, possibly more), you don’t get much of it until you’ve been there for more than a year… and I’ve only been here 10 months.
Taking the kids (including the newborn in July!) and M-i-L to Florida for 12 days. Half at Key West (with snokeling at the Dry Tortugas) and half at Disney (staying in a deluxe lodge, babee!). With a one day stopover at Canaveral to tour the base.
We already had our vacation for the season a few weeks ago in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Because during prime vacation season in late July/early August I’ll be having a baby. Better than any vacation I can think of
We went to the beach for a few days in May, but don’t have anything big planned for the rest of the summer. Lack of vacation time and a weird work schedule make it difficult. Left Hand of Dorkness and I honeymooned in Scandinavia last summer, which was awesome.
don’t ask, I read posts like yours and I wonder why American workers put up with such crap. It’s not my work ethic that keeps from taking vacations, plnnr; I don’t spend a minute longer in the office than I have to.
We’ll likely take a trip down to Disneyland at some point. We’re annual passholders, so we can go down for a 2-3 days here and there. We’ll do some camping, mostly weekend stuff. Suburban Plankton has accrued a ton of time off so we’ll be doing some long weekends. But no big trips
We like to take our big trips in the off season. We’ll do a whole week at Disneyland during Thanksgiving week. Also we are planning a trip overseas for early 2005, probably to Ireland so we are saving up for that.
No big overseas trip for me this summer for the first time in a while. Went to Scotland a couple of months ago, and probably just Devon or the Channel Islands in the summer. Maybe a couple of days in France, La Rochelle or somewhere, to pick up some wine
Two weeks on the southern Dalmatian coast, starting in early july. A few days in Dubrovnik, then off to Hvar. When I’m not sunning or swimming, I’ll be eating and drinking.
I’m taking classes this summer, but I have all of August off. What I have really been wanting to do is take a road trip out West. I’ve never driven past South Dakota, I’ve always flown. The only problem is my diabetic dog. He needs insulin every 12 hours. My BF could do it, but I don’t know…
I’d like to go through Colorado, Utah and Arizona. That would be great. Just drive and do whatever strikes my mood.
In July, I’m heading to Greece. We’re chartering a yacht and sailing it from Athens to Mykonos.
Hot weather, duty-free booze, nine boys on board (plus one fag hag), 49’ of boat, one Greek island… It’s going to be absolutely disastrous.
In August, I’m going to Malaga, Spain. Then we’ll catch a ferry to Morocco for a week. In late August, I’m heading back to Spain, but this time to Ibiza for a club closing party.
Just to put the icing on the cake, I head back home to Australia in December for another summer!
