Sunday Morning Puzzle # 15

The League of Puzzlers has bought our local supermarket, making shopping somewhat more of a challenge. You see, at the Puzzler’s Grocery Mart the name of each item for sale has been altered. For each word in a product’s name, a synonym has been substituted for the original word. Then, just to add to the confusion, the order of the words in the product title has often been mixed.

Examples:
"Albacore Fryer From A Caspian" is * Chicken of the Sea Tuna*
(Fryer = Chicken; From = of; A = the; Caspian = Sea, Albacore = Tuna)

"Second Trembler Porridge" is Quaker Instant Oatmeal
(Trembler = Quaker; Second = Instant; Porridge = Oatmeal)

"Franklin’s Tio Basmati Toast" is Uncle Ben’s Brown Rice
(Tio =Uncle; Franklin’s = Ben’s; Toast = Brown; Basmati = Rice)

I recently purchased 26 items from this store. They are listed below. Can you figure out what I really bought?

The 32 problems below include the 26 product synonyms mentioned above, as well as six extra problems. The six extra problems are not items I bought from the Puzzler’s Grocery Mart. I didn’t need to buy them because they’re leftovers—and I never like to throw out leftovers.

Last week in Sunday Morning Puzzle #14, six celebrity names were unsolved. They include one actress, one athlete, two authors, one entertainer, and one politician. I have anagrammed a well-known “work” for each of these six people, and inserted these anagrams into the list below. Try not to confuse the 26 synonym puzzles with the 6 anagram puzzles. You can reference Sunday Morning Puzzle #14 here and review the unsolved names. Please help me empty my puzzle fridge so I won’t have this leftover problem next week. Thanks.

Hey aseymayo! I wondered if you had seen last week’s puzzle. It was the first time I felt no one had gotten all the answers and thought that maybe I was making these things too hard/complex.

I assumed this puzzle would be easy to put together, but after a trip to the local store I was surprised just how few products lend themselves to this kind of puzzle treatment. Most grocery product names are too short or have synonymless words or names in them. Grrrr! I kept wishing for products with many many words in their titles-- which would be a lot of fun to encrypt. But most have at most 3 or 4. I suppose they think consumers won’t remember longer titles.

Good luck with the rest of the puzzle… I’m betting that all the answers start coming very quickly now. And, just wondering, last week you did get the name I was surprised no one found, didn’t you?

I’m gonna be fairly useless here

  1. Sir Boil - Mr. Bubble
  1. Knave Breaker - Cracker Jack
  2. Sap Lodge Journal - Log Cabin Syrup
  3. Foremost Rosy Pie Nobleman - Red Baron Supreme Pizza
  4. Brew Sway Tumbling - Rolling Rock Beer

How could I think “Nipper” and not think of his (or her) master’s voice?

  1. Assist Denudes Clingy Belt - Band-Aid Adhesive Strips
  2. Currant Crazy Spaceheads Mail - Post Grape Nuts Flakes
