Sunday Morning Puzzle # 29

In order to make the grade with Sunday Morning Puzzle #29, you’ll have to follow some rather tricky directions. However, I’m sure once you study these directions a bit you’ll be able to see your way through to the solution. If you’ve worked any of these “Key Word” puzzles before, you know the drill:

This week’s puzzle consists of twelve movie titles with a common theme. The movie titles have undergone “Key Word Encoding”. In KWE, a word with no repeating letters is chosen as the key word. Each time a letter from the key word appears in the text to be encoded, that letter is replaced with the following letter from the key word. If the letter to be encoded is the last letter of the key word, it is replaced with the first letter of the key word. All other letters remain the same.

Example:
Key word: PROBLEMS
Text to be encoded: SUNDAY MORNING PUZZLE
Encoded text: PUNDAYSBONINGRUZZEM
2ND Text to be encoded: THE STRAIGHT DOPE
Encoded text: THMPTOAIGHTDBRM

The key word to be determined in this week’s puzzle describes the common theme of the movie titles.

After going through key word encoding, the movie titles were broken into two pieces, and the pieces were alphabetized.

Problem:
There is a third piece of letters with each movie title. That piece is not part of the movie title at all.

Mitigating Circumstance: The extra pieces when decoded will spell, in the order given, a thematic quote from J. Frank Dobie.

Secondary Problem: The extra quote pieces are encoded using “Reverse Key Word Encoding”. In RKWE, any time a letter from the key word appears in the text to be encoded, the previous letter from the key word is used instead. When the first letter from the key word appears in the text to be encoded, it is replaced by the last letter of the key word. All other letters remain the same.

Example:
Key Word: PROBLEMS
Text to be encoded: Sunday Morning Puzzle
Encoded text: MUNDAYERPNINGSUZZBL
2nd text to be encoded: THE STRAIGHT DOPE
Encoded text: THLMTPAIGHTDRSL

Note: The key word is the same for both the movie titles and the quote. It is up to you to determine which of the three letter pieces is the part of the quote.

MonkeyMensch, I’m the one that needs to say “Thanks!”

The SDMB has been super-supportive of this bizarre hobby of mine–putting up with a lot of typos recently as well as some missed Sundays. It’s an honor to post to an area with so many intelligent people–and have them respond so often. The posters here inspire me to try to create challenging yet fun puzzles. Thank you all.
