Sundogs, Parry arc, circumzenithal arc...

…and more, clearly visible today right from our office parking lot. It was one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen in my life. Also, I never wished so badly to have a better camera, but my phone did better than I expected:

Absolutely stunning!

VERY nice pictures.

Amazing.

Did you think you were entering the nexus of the universe?

It was more like a giant eye staring down from the sky…

I wonder how many locals were stymied it wasn’t the Rapture, after all.

Gorgeous.

I’ve bneen fascinated by Sundogs, which are actually one of the most common meteorologic optical phenomena. They occur about 10 times as often as rainbows, but people aren’t so familar with them or aware of them, so they miss them. Often they’re pretty unimpressive – much less cionspicuous than in your picture. But sometimes they can be even more spectacular, with bands of vibrant color.

Seeing all the arcs you see is less common, although I have sen them. You need a lot of ice crystals in the air, all around. One time I saw a display like this when I was at a ski resort, with the snow blower between me and the sun.

Your phone camera did great! Awesome pics!

Are you posting from the future?

Wow, amazing! I don’t think I’ve ever seen, or noticed, those before. Will have to pay more attention.

wow, trifecta!

Saw it too. Was absolutely stunning. Had no idea it was going on till a friend of mine called me and was all “Angua, go outside, now. Now look up at the sky. Isn’t it awesome? What is it? Figured I’d ask you, since you’re probably in the right field to know.”

I was happy for the rest of the day.

That’s amazing. You want to send those pics to NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day.

Sundogs are evil. We must shoot them down!!

Nope. Seems to work ok.

Thanks, but a colleague of mine had a better camera and took a better picture, which I just learned is already on spaceweather.com.

Sky and Telescope might pay you for that pic and put in their magazine…give it a shot!

Those are amazing. Both yours and your colleague’s.

Actually, I think yours are better because the sun is obscured by the tree which allows the effects to be more visible. In his, because the camera has to cope with the direct glare of the sun, they look washed-out in comparison to yours.
