but a dog, so I understand how hard it must be for the 2 of you.

When one of my cats, Nimue, died unexpectedly a couple years ago, my then-boyfriend (now husband) said to me,
“You never get over it, you just get used to it.”
And I think this is SO true. Give yourself plenty of time to grieve. Grief goes on its own schedule. It took me a month to put away Nimue’s food dish. I still dream sometimes that she has come back to life.
Our pets are a special and important part of our families. Try to remember the happy times and know that you gave your cat a good home and a good life. You’ll see him again on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge.

Just grabbed Piewacket kitty and gave him some extra Sunshine strokes. You have my condolences. Such things are never easy, separation is the price paid for being a loving person.
Having met Sunshine at your World Series Dopefest last fall, Phil and Leigh-Ann, I have complete empathy for your loss. My condolences. 
It must be very difficult, that he went so suddenly you couldn’t say good-bye. My sympathy.
