Why didn’t No Doubt get to do a recent song? Just a Girl is ancient. And Gwen and Sting should never duet again.
Munch, think it should be obvious to anyone who was even half-way paying attention that Shania’s drummer was going to fly his biplane home after the gig.
pepperlandgirl, I’d also like to know what you thought was wrong with last year’s, which I also thought was terrific.
Sorry, my bad. I missed last year completely, and hence, I forget that last year existed at all.
I meant the year before that with Aerosmith/Spears/Nsync. shudder
Yes, that was indeed a crapfest.
Also, was it a little too obvious that the 1/2 time show was directed towards the female audience, with both “Feel Like a Woman” and “I’m Just a Girl” playing? It was my understanding that Sting offered to sing “You Make Me Feel (Like a Natural Woman)”, but was told he could not. He then had a four hour orgasm and went on his way.
What was wrong with the sound??!! Was it my set? I could hardly hear the vocals or drums/bass once No Doubt came on.
It didn’t seem to me that Shania was lip synching - I thought they were just taking the sound directly from the board. Then when No Doubt started they switched to a different mic setup. The mix was 100% crap!!!
Oh, Shania was most definitely lip synching. Either that, or she is one hell of a ventriloquist. Ever wonder why someone can run into a crowd of fans screaming right next to them, yet only vocals register in the microphone? That’s because the microphone isn’t on.
Shania = total lip synching.
I think Sting & NoDoubt picked older tunes because the general public would recognize them more easily than something new. Plus I think The Police is being inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame (by No Doubt, no less) so that selection made sense. I was kinda hoping to see Andy & Stewart, however, but the Induction may get first/exclusive dibs into that reunion.
I would have preferred to see/hear Sting without Gwen, however. Not a fan.
liked the Gwen / Sting - actual singing !
Hated the lip synching Shania…
Was weirded out by the Morticia Addams outfit…
but…mmmmmm, shiny soda pull tab bra…drooool…
Shania Twain did look like Fran Dresher and Darth Vader’s love child.
I cracked up when Gwen Stefani was doing a belly dancing hip wiggle thing near Mr. Sell Out, Sting. I fully expected her to hump his leg right then and there. Now that would have been interesting.
Sting has a habit of making appearances at Global Events, like the Olympics and what not. It is not that he can, he just does.
On a scale of one to ten, I give it all a three.
Not that I have a say in any matter.
Also, what was up with Shania’s band.
Asian guitar player with a mohawk.
Black guy wearing flying goggles.
Some Revenge of the Nerds guy with a key-tar.
They looked like they were straight out of a comic book or refugees from the 80’s.
I want to drink Shania’s bathwater.
Just thought I’d share.
The band behind Shania seemed like they were goofing around, rather than playing. I wondered if they were irked by being asked to pretend, and decided to have fun with being obvious about the fakery.
The most definate moment of Shania’s lip-synching was when she was on the lift at the end of the song, and was about three seconds behind the vocal track. It was something like “Hey, Hey” and you saw her lips move a few seconds before the vocal kicked in.
You could also hear a big difference when Gwen Stefani stared singing. Sometimes, when making a “P” sound, there would be a “Pft” into the mic, and at other times, she sounded out of breath. It was a definate change from Shania’s note-perfect, background-noiseless rendition.
Heh. No Doubt’s Bathwater-
Hmm… There’s a thought.
I just rewatched it, and was anyone else a little freaked out by the psychotic punk cheerleaders that menacingly surrounded Gwen at the end of Just A Girl? I thought were were about to witness Ms. Stefani’s cannibalization live at the Superbowl.
And like I said in the lip-synching thread, I thought Shania doing so sucked, because I’ve seen her live specials, and she can sing live, so why synch? But then again, I guess Gwen kinda answered that. I saw No Doubt live in November, and all of them were jumping and running around like they were on speed, and yet they sounded great through the entire show. But at Halftime, She sounded pretty weak, I thought. Ah well.
Shania cheated and Gwen sounded awful. I mean, it was like she had never sung that song before.
I agree with Sycorax–they should’ve let Jon Bon do the halftime show and let Sting, Shania and No Doubt play the local VFW.
And I like No Doubt.
