Super Bowl Commercials!

I was surprised as well and that one made me smile.

I must now be officially old because I’m about to say that it seems like the commercials get more lame every year and back in *my *day…

I wasn’t a big fan of the Dennys commercials, but the space chicken was probably my 2nd favorite moment of the evening.

I thought the worst ad of the night was the Vizio ad- supposedly the new TVs will make “the best of the internet” available, but the stuff that was being dropped in was more like the schlockiest of the internet. The Zuma Zuma guy? The Chocolate Rain guy? The hamster-with-a-funny-expression? Please. That stuff is years old, and only makes me not want to buy a product that uses them in their ads.

I liked the Snickers ad (“ooh, that hurt!”), the beaver violonist, and a couple others, but overall I thought it was a pretty weak night for Super Bowl ads.

I posted this link a few posts above yours. It is a link to show all the commercials. I figured, instead of having thirty people all make random links to the same commercials, I’d post one link to them all. I missed a few myself and I know there are others who may have missed them due to international viewing or bursting bladders.

Those annoyed the hell out of me. It was especially stupid to show these kinds of ads during the Super Bowl, which has a lot of female viewers. Personally, I was downstairs watching the game alone while my husband was upstairs watching shows on DVR. Also, I will not watch his vampire show with him!

I thought the ads were pretty poorly done overall. The Vacation hotel ad with Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo was disappointing … I wanted more. Doritos and Bud Light were especially lame. My favorites of the night were the Favre ad, Punxatawney Polamalu, and of course Jay/Oprah/Dave.

Exactly. What was the point of that? Being green will turn you into an authoritarian asshole?
Yep, this’ll play right into the hands of the Fox News cap-and-trade opposing crowd.

Agreed. And I dislike the whole “go to our website to see more” trend.

You know what? No. I’m not going to your website to watch the rest of your commercial. So there.

Michael Feldman interviewed a guy who built his own “Family Truckster” on What’d Ya Know Saturday, which is the car featured in the ad. This got me excited for this ad, but we barely got to see the car. Oh well…and no, I’m not going to your website to see the rest of the commercial.

Don’t forget the voiceover in those Charger ads is Michael C. “Dexter” Hall…I’m not sure if “serial killer” is the vibe they wanted to give off (even if Dexter has a code).

So for me:

  1. Betty and Abe
  2. Google (I’m curious to see if this goes viral and we get a whole bunch of variations of this ad)
  3. Space chicken
  4. Nothing else.

I liked the McDonald’s ad just before the game - Lebron/Dwight Howard dunking in homage to the Bird/Magic H-O-R-S-E game, ending with a cameo by Bird, with neither of the whippersnappers knowing who he was.

Joe

Hmmm, did no one like the Doritos ad with the dog and the bark collar? I thought it was pretty funny.

As much as I love the Simpsons, I find it quite interesting that in the first year that Pepsi chooses not to buy advertising at the Super Bowl, they show up in a traditional ad for Coke with the standard “Coke is a unifier” message, even though the trademark Simpsons style of snark and sarcasm is more in line with the alternative, “choice of a new generation”-style that is Pepsi’s forte. It really shows how after 20 years, these bizarre, sarcastic characters created by an underground cartoonist that debuted on an upstart fourth network have become American cultural and commercial icons alongside Mickey Mouse, the McDonald’s arches and Coca-Cola itself. I don’t know whether to say “woo-hoo” or “d’oh.”

As a fan of “old-timey” music, I got a kick out of the tune played by the fiddling beaver’s tune choice. Think it was the first tune I learned to play on mando.

Soldier’s Joy

Also the title of an excellent book by Madison Smartt Bell…

Dude, you totally missed the point.

How many times have you told your friends that they’re playing like girls (no offense to the XX Dopers out there; it’s a Y thing)? Or that your grandma could play better?

I almost dropped my plate of wings and meatballs when she got stuck. Betty White is so lovable. Then when she ate the Snickers bar and turned into a man again, I got the joke and laughed so hard I never heard what Abe Vigoda said…

I liked it!

Nothing you cant see in Maxim or FHM…or so I’ve heard.

Or so you’ve heard…right.

This is exactly it, as shown by the line “Dude, you’re playin’ like Betty White out there.”

I was eating a sub when it came on, so I guess I looked away right when she turned into a man.
Still doesn’t do much for me.

  1. Google

and that’s about it.

Although I did enjoy thhe Vizio ad, because they had David after Dentist in there.

My daughter saw a few of the commercials and commented that they don’t seem to have a very high opinion of women. I replied that they don’t seem to have a very high opinion of men either.

The Audi ad freaked us out. I honestly thought it was going to be an anti-Obama or Sarah Palin for President ad.
