Super Bowl Commercials!

I was surprised at all the violence in the commercials - an awful lot of slapping. That plus the ‘be a man’ themes made me wonder if they’re trying to promote the FAIR myth about Super Bowl domestic violence.

Apparently I’m one of the only ones who liked the Audi ad, and I usually can’t stand Cheap Trick either. Most of the people I was with enjoyed it too.

The Google one was rather nicely done; one of the few ads that achieved exactly the right effect, instead of having a story that makes no sense or goes nowhere.

The Intel ad would have been good if, you know, Intel had actually made a robot like that.

There already are a couple of variations. Google had one during the Christmas season about guys who put Christmas lights on their car. Another is about Batman.

I really liked the bud light astronomers ad, along with the similar Lost parody. I also noticed the trend of man-stereotypes. So stupid. And a lot of ads were “here’s a funny (or at least we hope it’s funny) little skit. Oh, yeah, and we’re also selling a product that we’ll loosely tie it to”.

The google ad was very good, although I kept wanting to stop and read all the alternate suggestions. One for “assembling a crib” was “assembling a crossbow”.

It wouldn’t be February if I didn’t read all about how this year’s batch of Super Bowl ads were worse than usual.

Also, I’m sure there’s a thread somewhere entitled “Who here isn’t going to watch the Super Bowl???”
As regular as the arrival of the groundhog.

I can confirm that the “web-only” versions of the Godaddy commercials are not, in fact, “too hot for TV”.

And it wouldn’t be the SDMB without someone to stop by the thread and complain about people complaining.

Not complaining at all. I would be disappointed otherwise.

Oh, all right. I’ll stop complaining about you complaining about me complaining.

“I didn’t get a harumph out of that guy!”

I liked that one too, and I’m surprised it didn’t get more mention here and elsewhere. Sure, it’s a pretty simple homage, but hey–a LeBron vs. Howard dunk contest is going to be a thumbs-up in my book.

No to mention that the actual cafeteria at Intel headquarters looks nothing like that.

Has anyone else noticed that GoDaddy hasn’t actually changed the script for their ads over the past few years? And that the actresses spouting off the benefits of the site aren’t exactly believable as web site designers, based on their, um, jobs?

Doritos’ ‘House Rules’ ad is tops with users

House Rules is the top commercial for MSNBC viewers?

It gets worse.

I guess all the people accusing The Wall Street Journal of becoming fascist after Rupert Murdoch bought it are more correct than they knew.

Yep, the Google campaign has been around long enough for there to be parodies of it.

I thought the Audi “Green Police” commercial was the best.

Their point was very clear to me:

Some people think Green folk are kind of self-righteous and a bit pushy (the ones I know are). So let’s exaggerate that for fun, because – and maybe here’s where they made a mistake – Green folk also have a sense a humor (the ones I know do).

I found it funny in both ways.

Main reason I liked this ad is because I now have a Cheap Trick song as an earworm crowding out its terribly annoying predecessor - Judy in Disguise (don’t ask!)

I would have found it funny if the vehicle at the end was a Hummer, but to show the green movement as a fascist state and then show a product that pleases the fascists was lost on me. They demonstrated something to rebel against, not join…I wonder how they could have turned it into a Bud Light commercial?

it’s interesting that sometimes a good ad is isn’t actually a good ad. I liked the ad about the toys in the SUV partying like rock stars. One problem, I have no idea which SUV the ad was for.

Was that the actor who plays Dr. Candle in “Lost” in the astronomer’s spot?

they *were *ribbing the fascist strain that runs through the green movement (it’s there in every kind of movement really).

but by it being a green product they’re basically saying, “We’re a bit obnoxious and preachy, but not that much!”

(It reminds me of the old Steve Martin SNL routines that end with “Nah!”).
