Not sure if there’s a huge demand for this topic but since it’s selling better than Zelda did I’m sure somebody out there is playing.
So far, I’m loving it. It took me a while to get used to the controls (there’s a lot of different moves!) but now that I’ve gotten the hang of it I can see that this is pretty much the culmination of all the other 3d Mario games.
The Cappy “possession” mechanic is a great change of pace and sometimes hilarious, like when I ended up taking over
a giant roast
New Donk City is my favorite world so far, and the “finale” of it (no spoilers) might be one my most joyful gaming moments. I also like the beach level that’s basically a love letter to Mario Sunshine.
My only dislikes so far are the Broodles and the motion controls. The Broodles just seem out of place. I’m not sure if they’ve been in a Mario game before, or they’ll get explained where they came from eventually. They’re basically the Koopa Kids so why not just use them?
The motion controls are a little hit or miss. The general “shake” ones are fine, but I have a hard time flicking it sideways to spin Cappy around you.
Anyone else playing? Please spoiler box any big story moments or anything involving the endgame.
5 seconds of intensive research (Google) has established that the Broodals (that’s how it’s spelled) were introduced in Oddysey. They were not previously in the Mario franchise.
I’ve got it and like it. I disagree with a lot of the reviewers in that I don’t think the game does a whole lot different to shake up the 3D Mario formula for the most part, which isn’t a bad thing. Lots of reviewers seem to be saying that this is significant evolution for the series but I don’t see that. It’s a really good game though.
My complaints right now:
Motion controls can’t be completely disabled. There is an option in the controls but there are still a few things that require you to use the motion controls which I’m not a fan of. Particularly on an airplane or in public.
The aim/fire controls when you take over the tank are not good. Having to aim with the right stick and fire with a button on the right joycon requires you to aim, stop, shoot, aim again, stop, shoot etc… Don’t know why they didn’t set one of the bumpers as the fire button.
The costumes don’t really do anything or change the gameplay in any way.
Being able to use Cappy as a projectile at will significantly reduced the amount of enemy stomping required and makes enemy encounters a bit too easy.
All of those are fairly minor though and the game is at least a 9/10. I just don’t think it’s a mind blower like SM64 and SM Galaxy were. I preferred 3D World to this one a bit actually.
Been playing it for a while now and just got through the New Donk City level. Like Cubsfan said, I don’t think it breaks any new ground but it seems to take a lot from past Mario games and even some non-Mario games and mashes them together into something that’s just simply fun to play. The 3D to 2D transfer looks to be borrowed from Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. And a lot of missions and ideas are pulled from Lego City Undercover (control a dinosaur, drive a remote control car, etc.) The platforming difficulty seems to be toned down from the past Galaxy games which IMHO is nice since it makes the game more appealing to casual players.
So a very polished game that seems to know what works and what’s fun. Can’t argue with that.
I’ve been playing this a bit, and yeah, it’s a fine 3D Mario game. There could be about a quarter as many moons as there are and I’d be pretty okay with it. I agree that the emphasis on Cappy throwing as a damage mechanism takes away from the core “jump on stuff” idea, and that the game as a whole is way too easy thus far (both in the mechanical execution required and the complete lack of consequences for failure/death).
I will definitely finish it, I will definitely have fun, I will most likely not get 100% of the moons, and I will probably want to play Mario 64 again more than anything else once I’m done.
I’m a good few months away from getting a Switch, but I did wonder how they’d top the SMG games or bring forward SMB games in the same way they did from SMB to SMB3 and then onto World and the 3D games.
I agree that the early parts of the game are too easy, although that’s pretty standard for Mario games by now. Hopefully by the end there’s some challenging stuff. From what I can tell I’m getting close to the end of the main story, and things are picking up nicely. Right now I’d put this behind the Galaxies and ahead of all the other 3D Marios. We’ll see how I feel after finishing it.
Yeah, I’m through the story now and I agree. Although they’re definitely not slowing down with the number of moons available.
It’s been interesting to watch my boys (6 & 8) playing this. It reminds me that a lot of what I find easy is just from experience with earlier Mario games. The little clues about hidden coins and so on seem obvious to me, but they often don’t notice. I think this approach Nintendo takes of making the main story fairly easy and then upping the challenge later is a good way to satisfy everyone.
I agree, although SMB 3D World on Wii U was perfectly fine. No problems at all landing on what I was trying to stomp. On this one it’s harder. I was fighting a boss and was jumping on those spin flowers and you were supposed to float down and land on the head of the boss. I kept missing the heading while floating down for some reason even though I was lined up to hit it.
I liked SMB 3D World better than this one to be honest. The controls were tighter and the camera was better.
I got a Switch the other day and this is the first new game I got for it. My daughter and I have been playing in two-player mode. She is Cappy and I am Mario. It’s a pretty well done two-player mode, not just something that adds nothing. She’s been enjoying flying around and helping during boss battles.
It’s been great and I appreciate the difficulty being a little bit easier so far.
Are they making a direct sequel for this game on Switch? Like Super Mario Odyssey 2?
Nothing’s been announced. My best guess would be… don’t hold your breath. Of the 3D Marios, the only direct sequel they’ve put out was Super Mario Galaxy 2, mainly because they had so much extra they made that didn’t make it into Galaxy 1.
Yeah, I was just hoping so since Odyssey was also a huge hit. I was also hoping with the extended life of the Switch, they might push themselves to put out another Mario game that is new.
So were the costumes originally going to have powers associated with them, but then they went the “hat goes in the objects” way instead? It’d be nice if the costumes did something. I bought swimming equipment in the water area and it didn’t even improve my swimming. Of course, becoming a fish did…
They sorta did. Sure, Super Mario 3D World itself is a remake, but the added on Bowser’s Fury is essentially a second, pack-in game. Unlike the main game, it goes back to the open-world concept, having you collect some sort of item, just like the moons in Odyssey. Thus, it plays more like Odyssey than 3D World.
As for Odyssey itself? I’d look more toward the possibility of DLC than an actual new game. If they were going to make a sequel, I think they would have announced it soon after the original. I very much suspect that Bowser’s Fury may have been what they did instead of a sequel.
And I suspect the costumes were always intended to be cosmetic, given how many there are. Given that it’s Nintendo, they’d have to balance every single one of them.
