Ok, ill admit it, I’m an easy target for DVD special packaging. If the box is cool, I’ll probably buy it, even if I dont really like the movie. But these really are pushing it, dont you think?
Phantasm
Man, you’d really need to love the film to justify that on your shelf.
Hulk
Its the size of five dvds! Space is tight on my shelf, why would i buy such a thing?
Hellraiser
You wouldnt mind if they were GOOD movies.
The matrix
Where does the figurine go? the bin, if you ask me.
And thats just off the top of my head. I couldnt find a link to the I, Robot Sonny-head case (really) or the huge Alien head that came with the Quadrilogy. And of course we all know about the “Homer head” debacle. What burns me with these “Limited” Packages is that they’re still on shelves for years. Just how limited are they? Can any one come up with worse examples? Or is there a special packaging you would love to see?
I liked the Evil Dead 2 “skin” cover, the one that looked like a book bound in skin, complete with stretched-out face. That I’d buy. There was also a pretty cool Repo Man special edition that came in a metal tin stamped like a license (number) plate. Most of the time though, I could care less about the packaging; just give me the movie, in something that isn’t going to fall apart.
I bought Eraserhead from David Lynch’s website. The DVD is shipped in an oversized box that won’t fit on any normal DVD shelf (of course, “normal” and David Lynch are rarelt spoken in the same sentence).
I made a cover and put the disc in a regular snapcase.
Last year for Christmas, I got my wife a special limited edition package of “LOTR” that came in an ornately designed, square, see-through box with a scale-model replica of one of the scenes from the movie. It doesn’t fit on the shelf too well, either, but it’s purty. And she doesn’t know any other LOTR fans who have one.
