Man this was the second Summer movie this year to let me down (after Disclosure Day). And I feel worse feeling this way because every Chud on the Internet has hated this movie since it was announced and I don’t want to be even remotely associated with that.
Some context: I really really liked last year’s Superman. I have also read the source comic that this Supergirl story was based on and liked it so I knew this would be more of a sci fi adventure than a superhero movie and was okay with that.
The good:
Mily Alcock is good as Supergirl. This is an interesting take on the character because unlike Kal, she remembers Krypton and feels true sorrow for its loss vs Superman who never really knew his home (and in this incarnation has reason to reject it).
I liked the world building. I get a kick out of just random aliens are everywhere scifi. It reminds me of old cartoons like Space Ghost.
The villain. I like moral ambiguity as much as anyone but sometimes you just need a villain that is easy to hate (more on that later though).
The bad.
It just looked ugly. There was zero color. Everything was muddy. I get we were seeing some messed up planets but there is a way to make that look like something other than brown.
Lobo. He just had none of the character’s charisma and none of Jason Momoa’s showed through.
Every action sequence was flat when they should have been exciting.
I think in short this was a badly directed movie. I know James Gunn can’t direct them all but this one suffered.
The ending. I will spoiler this. I hated that Supergirl killed the villain. I get why. To save the girl from doing it which is commendable but at the end of the day that means there’s a person on Earth with the power of Superman who is willing to kill and that is terrifying. The original comic is more vague about what happened at the end.
So yeah I didn’t hate this but I wanted to love it and I only thought it was fine at best.
