This already looks amazing. Hoping my favorite hero is done right this time.
I’m hoping it will be good. I don’t like that many of the DC superhero movies, particularly the Batman ones, are so “dark”. I miss the lightness of the Christopher Reeve Superman movies.
I was not expecting to see Hawkgirl, Guy Gardner, or Krypto the Super-Dog, that’s for sure.
This movie looks fun. I haven’t enjoyed any of the Superman films since Superman Returns and this is giving me similar vibes to that movie.
I was going to post that James Gunn seems to have hit the sweet spot, where he can put a lot of humor and color into his films without making them campy. But I wanted to see the clip before posting. And now I see this is a James Gunn film, LOL.
I’m extremely interested in this. I also liked his Suicide Squad film so I know he can make DC fun.
Mr. Terrific was in it also!
(People who watched the CW Flash show may recognize the character.)
It’s a bit of a wonder that DC has had little success with comic book movies compared to Marvel despite iconic characters like Batman or, especially, Superman.
I like that this Superman can, in fact, bleed. Having him be completely invulnerable takes all the tension from his action scenes.
It looks like they seem to be creating a milieu where superheroes and supervillains are much more common than in previous DC movies. I like that they’re leaning into the craziness of the comic book universe.
The Burton and Nolan Batman movies were very successful.
Yes they were successful but they were so dark.
Yeah James Gunn has said this will not be an origin story and will begin with heroes being a fact of life in the world.
That’s probably for the best. How many Spiderman films were origin stories? I thought several.
I think you can credit Kevin Feige. He was hired on to be associate producer of the first X-Men film in 2000, due to his massive knowledge of the Marvel comic book universe. He impressed Avi Arad (who ran Marvel at the time) so much that he essentially became Arad’s second-in-command at Marvel. That film was the start of the extremely successful films from Marvel, and he has been part of them ever since.
So yeah, I think it all starts with that one guy. His fingerprints are all over everything Marvel has done cinematically during their run of highly successful films. DC never had him.
Maybe James Gunn can be DC’s magic feather. Though I’m not sure he could direct all of their films, but maybe he can be involved in them somewhat.
From what I’ve read, this film takes place after Superman is already part of the world (so not a Smallville style origin story) but where he’s not already established as a total legend (so not as far along as he was in the DC Extended Universe films).
I also love that the Lex Luthor in this movie was reportedly inspired by the Smallville version, because that’s my favorite version of that character from any on-screen portrayal. (Of course YMMV.)
Definitely Kevin Feige deserves a lot of credit for the Marvel success. I hope he was well compensated for the billions in box office revenues.
His biggest failure was losing James Gunn to DC, and now we are seeing the results. Trailer looks awesome, very excited for this now when I had zero interest a few minutes ago.
My problem with previous Superman movies was that he was just too powerful.
He was bullet-proof, could fly, travel in space without a suit, shoot lasers from his eyes, breathe frost, lift a huge weight and run as fast as the Flash.
I read someplace that this apparent invulnerability make Superman boring and hard to write for. Batman, on the other hand, has no superpowers but is just really fit with lots of tools.
That’s how powerful Superman is. The trick is to write him so he’s relatable, which is what the last couple of movies tried. The problem was that they were written by super-creep Bryan SInger (so we had Supervoyeur) and Zach Schneider who did not understand the character at all.
That’s just Superman the character, that’s kind of the point of the character. If he didn’t do all that, he wouldn’t be Superman. In a world of superheroes, he’s the apex.
I found the most interesting stories to be ones where his powers couldn’t fix things. Who cares if he can shrug off a rocket blast or punch through a mountain if he puts his foot in his mouth talking to Lois or struggles to preserve his secret identity.
Or the stories where his powers are the problem themselves. Such as when he’s tempted to become a benevolent tyrant to protect people from themselves.
That’s only a problem if you have him fighting regular people. Which obviously hasn’t been the case since like the 60s TV show.
I love the old Superman shows where someone unloads a gun at him and then when the gun is empty, throws the gun at him.
Makes me want to write a sketch where the gun knocks him out cold and the criminal goes, “Oh, he’s literally just bullet-proof!”
Yeah one of the main points of Superman is he is the most powerful person in the world but he chooses to use that power to help others and inspire.
His power is a feature not a bug. The idea is he tries to use his powers in a way so he doesn’t just tear the bank robber limb from limb. This is why a character like Homelander is so shocking because he makes no effort at all to do that.
