Supergirl Season 3

The actress playing Imra is British but her accent is not what I’d regard as typical. Is it fabricated or indicating that she grew up elsewhere or some combination?

My first reaction to this was a weird jolt of shock, because “Scott” is actually my name! See, you’ve penetrated my clever disguise with even fewer clues than Kara has let drop about Clark. Spooky!

Seriously, I take your point. But I am kind of used to the idea that superheroes keep a close guard on anything that might jeopardize their (or especially another hero’s) true identity. I mean, if you wanted to write a story where some fiendish villain puts the clues together and figures out who Superman really is, that’s just the sort of slip-up you would use: “Thanks to overhearing Supergirl’s careless remark, I learned that Superman’s real name must be Clark. So I started looking into Superman’s activities. Turns out he spends a lot of time hanging around with a good-looking reporter from the Daily Planet. So I asked myself, does she have any connection with someone named Clark? Does the Daily Planet have anyone named Clark on staff, for example? It turns out that they do! I wonder…”

As far as this week’s episode is concerned, I think that was the most brutal fight we’ve ever seen on this show. It had reminders of the original Superman-Doomsday fight in the comics, I’m sure deliberately. I think a lot of the lead-up to the Reign storyline has been kind of clumsy, but the payoff was pretty good. Rather more convincing than the cartoony fight with Overgirl last week.

So, does Imra have her Saturn Girl mental powers in this iteration? They never mention it, and she doesn’t say anything about it when she’s offering to help out the DEO. But they certainly seem to imply that the Legion members are all superheroes of some kind. It seems odd that nobody’s asked what her powers are.

This was my biggest peeve with this episode. Normally, I watch Lucifer, then catch up on Supergirl on a “when I get around to it” basis, but hopes of something real with the LSH made me switch. I did like Supergirl taking Superboy’s role inspiring the LSH. But I wanted Saturn Girl (just like I wanted Mon-El), native of Titan, with all her power. Instead I got Imra Ardeen, who not only wasn’t blonde but showed no powers just so we can have a surprise at a later date, though it will make no sense to have hidden it.

I don’t know the comics at all, I’m lucky I know who Supergirl and that mainly thanks to Helen Slater. But they’ve made it clear Irma is some sort of super, just not what type yet. They even talked about Mon-El assembling a team of Heroes.

Felicity Smoak-Queen and Iris West-Allen are members of a super team though they have no powers. And if she has powers (I am fairly certain she does have powers), there was no reason to delay other than “surprise” in the second half of the season.

OK, I just assumed she has powers. I don’t think it will really be a surprise. where would she have used her powers thus far?

Which is also my biggest issue with the episode. Supergirl confronts the new evil Kyptonian Devil Lady, why not have any other Supers and for that matter even agents nearby Catco to help out. Also why did Supergirl leave her challenge mark on Catco? Shouldn’t an empty field been chosen?

Yeah, this definitely looks like a job for Superman. If ever there’s a time to help out his cousin with another Kryptonian baddie.

Yeah, I had that same thought. I guess she wanted to make sure it was seen? Although once Reign showed up, hightailing to a non-inhabited area for the actual fight would have been polite (and super-heroy). Although then we would have missed all the folks in the room standing around watching the fight instead of fleeing like I would have been.

She did note that she’d beat Kal down, so presumably she was overconfident of her ability to handle the baddie.

And, while I realize it is iconic (and she has nice legs), but is Supergirl going to take a hint from the two Kryptonians she’s been fighting and ditch the skirt for some pants?

I didn’t know J’onn kept up with pop culture. “The Empire Strikes Back is the greatest sequel ever made.” I also loved his father’s reaction to hot cocoa. “This brown water is far superior to the other brown water you introduced me to.” I’d like to see J’onn introduce his father to Chocos, the DC-verse’s equivalent of Oreos.

She’s acted in Bollywood, so I presume what you’re hearing is an Indian lilt.

As I posted over in the Legends thread, Supergirl returns on Jan 15. Then it goes on a nine week hiatus on Feb 12, to be replaced by Legends of Tomorrow, before come back April 16 to conclude its season.

I wonder if this is fallout from executive producer Andrew Kreisberg being fired for sexual harassment? The schedule change gives them extra time to retool. But it can’t be good for either show.

Yes to both - one, Clark and Kara need to have an arrangement, like “Ok. We’re agreed. Any Kryptonian supervillain warrants a text message, right? Right!” Two, challenging a supervillain with a symbol on top of a building full of people is not nice.

Oliver Queen has some Kryptonite, shouldn’t the DEO? In case of any evil Kryptonions?

Brian

I think Superman convinced them to give it up in an early episode. Not sure why.

I thought that was hilarious in the cross-over - they’ve already stated that supergirl is not on that earth - and by extension I assume clark isn’t. (he didn’t show up to fight the nazi’s so safe bet)

(a) where did the kryptonite come from ?
(b) why would Oliver feel the need to have an arrow ready ‘just in case an evil supergirl showed up’ (or even know that it would work) ?

Clark was suspicious of J’onn for keeping kryptonite at the DEO. After Project Cadmus stole some to create Metallo, Clark was able to convince J’onn to give up all his remaining kryptonite.

Oliver fought a mind-controlled Supergirl in the last crossover. Keeping some kryptonite arrows in case another evil Supergirl showed up was just being prudent. Where he got the kryptonite and how he knew about it was never answered.

Maybe Saturn Girl, Mon El, etc. didn’t join in the fight against Reign because they don’t want to interfere with history. However… the next episode is called “Legion of Super Heroes”, so I suspect they’ll do something then

Finally, the Legion takes flight. I’m a bit disappointed that Brainiac 5 was blue rather than green and Saturn Girl wasn’t wearing pink. I’m not necessarily asking that Imra’s costume have the side panels cut out, but would it have killed them to give her leather outfit a bit of color?

There was something odd about the writing on this episode. Parts of it wanted to be a typical action-oriented superhero episode. Parts of it wanted to be comedic. Parts of it wanted to be a psychological examination of the Kara-Supergirl duality, taking place in Kara’s mind. None of it quite meshed together. Maybe they should borrow some Legends of Tomorrow writers; that show has gotten mixing those different elements together down to a “T”.

The best bit was when J’onn had to pretend to be a sick Kara Danvers to Lena Luthor. And then Lena started to talk about kissing Jimmy Olsen. Cat would have seen right through the disguise, but Lena doesn’t have a clue, does she?

Comic-book easter egg: Supergirl’s Supercat was named Streaky. While in the comics Streaky got superpowers after being exposed to X-kryptonite, in this show the cat was apparently just an ordinary stray that Kara adopted.

I thought it was a better than average episode. Though in a world where Superman also exists, how he isn’t being called for help against a psycho Kryptotian pulls me out of the story a bit, especially with his cousin in coma. Couldn’t they at least say he was busy with so and so issue?

Yeah, this was by no means a bad episode, just a bit disjointed in its execution. It was a good setup for the rest of the season, although maybe the Legion was a bit too nerfed. Isn’t Mon-el supposed to be almost as strong as Kara? And yet he couldn’t punch his way out of an ice sphere. Also that cult leader who worshipped Supergirl is now following Reign. That’s like the Pope suddenly turning into a Satanist.
