Superman (2025)

That’s really encouraging to hear.

Loved it!

The action scenes are strong, but the core of the movie is it’s heart. It’s Superman at his best. I hope they make more. I’d like to see more of Clark Kent in glasses. I feared all the other heroes would be too much, but it was all handled very well. Loved Krypto!

Nevermind.

Saw it and really liked it. It was a comic book movie in all the best ways. Some dialogue was a little on the nose but that was okay. They took an interesting angle with Krypton by making Kal El’s parents awful people. The comics have had Jor El be an asshole in the past but I don’t remember any incarnation of Superman with quite this angle. It reminded me of Invincible..

Getting back to the idea that you don’t need a bodybuilder for the role, I’m reading an interview with David Corenswet, who is playing Clark Kent/Superman. It mentions that one of the finalists for the role was Nicholas Hoult, who is playing Lex Luthor in the movie. Now he definitely seems physically wrong for the role.

We saw it. It is everything I want from a Superman movie. The last one that did that was the 1978 movie.

Superman is human and aspires to be the best that humanity can be. The fights are tense, showing how invulnerable does not mean invincible. The personal drama feels real and very human. He struggles with his identities of Clark Kent, Kal El, and Superman.

The characterizations are great. Lois and Jimmy each show personal growth. The other superheroes have personality. I love Hawkgirl and Mr Terrific. Green Lantern, never one of my favorites, is fun. The banter and comments are perfect.

The whole movie is very much like a comic book. The holding back massive objects, the domino’ing of skyscrapers, the explanatory asides, the villain monologues.* It is great!

*Vague descriptions of minor non-plot happenings spoilered out of caution.

I’m fairly sure it’s not what it seems. It will be the basis for a plot twist in a future movie. Too juicy to not come back to it.

I think it would be pretty weird to undo the one and only bit of character growth in the whole movie.

Not the only character growth, see also “Lois, I love you, should’ve told you earlier”.

They won’t undo the character growth, they’ll reveal more about it. Compare to what Luke learned about his father in A New Hope to “Luke, I am your father!”.

I’m just saying that what a protagonist learns about their deceased parents in a movie is a classic point for future movies to expand upon. And given the unusualness of this version, a likely point for an unexpected reveal.

Normally, sure… but they are long gone. There is nothing left to do there.

No one is ever gone for good in comics.

I saw it yesterday and loved it. I had one question that may be due to my lack of in-depth knowledge about the DCU.

The opening scroll mentions 3 centuries of metahumans. Is that new to Gunn’s DCU or comics canon? They didn’t really explain it further in the movie unless I missed it.

I believe this is new to Gunn’s DCU. Canon was that Superman was the first metahuman and others came after. This is a retcon

In an ostensible attempt to bring their comic book continuity more in-line with James Gunn’s plans for both Superman and the larger DCU, the first issue of New History of the DC Universe series has seen the eponymous publisher retcon their own canon in such a way that, rather than introducing the world to the concept of superheroes and inspiring generation after generation of future crimefighters, the Man of Steel’s public debut is a relatively uneventful blip in history. - SOURCE

And…

James Gunn confirmed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that metahumans have existed in the DC Universe for 300 years. “In this world, humanity has been clued into the existence of metahumans… for 300 years,” he said. Gunn added that in the DCU, encountering a metahuman is treated as casually as spotting a famous celebrity.
The filmmaker explained that the general public has long accepted the existence of beings with extraordinary abilities. “If you saw a shark-man walking down the street, you’d probably vomit and s— yourself to death,” Gunn said. “If they saw one, it would be more like if you saw Paul McCartney on the sidewalk in New York.” This cultural normalization of super-powered individuals shapes the setting of the upcoming Superman film. - SOURCE

Thanks!

I’m not really familiar with Mr Terrific, was that paint on his face?

Makeup and a mask, I believe.

Mr. Terrific has a special mask, the T-Mask, which is bonded to his face (and can be made to disappear from view). It is a hi-tech mask that provides various features like communication with others and controlling his sphere things.

Of course, it was makeup for the actor.

Box office numbers are coming in, looks like a hit!

Worldwide Debut: $217M
Domestic Debut: $122M

Oh, I am actually hearing those numbers are weak, especially internationally. Perhaps I’m wrong or misunderstanding, but I think $95,000,000 internationally was lower than expected/hoped by quite a bit.

I wonder if it is anti-American sentiment causing this when Superman is considered a quintessentially American hero? (just guessing)
