The very first Captain America did slightly better internationally than domestic.
This year’s Captain America 4 movie also did better, every so slightly, than it did domestically.

Nope, those numbers on opening weekend alone are great. They don’t even include Sunday and possibly not even Saturday.
Just got back from seeing this in a nearly sold out auditorium. I know it’s a low bar, but this is the best Superman movie I have seen in nearly 50 years.
Huh? Yes, they do.
I saw the 12 noon matinee on Saturday and the theater was less than half-full.
Mrs Magill and I saw the noon showing here, and it was uncomfortably full.
(Aside - it’s going to be just you and your youngest is a couple of weeks. How are you both handling it?)
But it was posted on Saturday, before the day was even done.
In my experience, that is completely normal. They may use estimates and pre-sales for the Sunday numbers.
Granted, I’m not the target audience but I found this movie goofy, nonsensical, frantically edited and with way too much CGI. And worst of all, unmemorable.
Give me Christopher Reeve and Gene Hackman any day.
Krypto was amusing though.
Apologies if political content should not be included in a CS thread, but I found it equal parts surprising, sad and ridiculous that the MAGA crowd apparently are up in arms over this new Superman movie because they consider this iteration of Supes too ‘woke’. As the op-ed piece says, this new Superman isn’t ‘woke’, he’s ‘kind’-- a distinction sadly lost on MAGAs.
While it’s true Superman is portrayed as kind, I wouldn’t cede that he’s not “woke”. Kindness is an essential part of being woke. And to the extent that the movie has political implications, it is woke.
(I think it’s fair to discuss the politics portrayed in the movie.)
Well, I guess in a larger sense it’s pretty sad that the very concept of wokeness-- “being aware of and actively attentive to important societal facts and issues; especially issues of racial and social justice”-- is considered a bad thing by anybody.
Yes, it is.
Yep. They release initial projections and then make a final adjustment in the week. It’s usually just a small adjustment, though.
This hasn’t been canonically true for quite some time. Since at least the 80s. The very, very first superhero in the DC Universe, canonically, was the Crimson Avenger who showed up in the 30’s. Kind of a proto-Batman with no powers. The first with superpowers is either the original Green Lantern or the original Flash (they’ve flipflopped on this). Justice Society are the earliest superhero team. Active during World War 2.
Superman showing up in the modern era was still made to be important, though. Mostly to affirm that he’s important to us, the readers. So he’s not ‘just another guy’ in the comics, but the world was already well aware of super beings.
I really enjoyed it, good use of less well known characters and a more cheerful tone, in general.
I suspect the second half of the message will turn out to be a warning about Zod and his plans.
Re: Spoiler above^^^
I hope not. That story has already been told.
At least twice.
I saw it. I really enjoyed it! My brother is very deep into DC comics so he’s been following everything with a magnifying glass. He enjoyed it too!
I am NOT steeped in comic lore, and I found it to be like the 1978 movie because it was very accessible. I remember just watching the 1978 movie as any other movie that came on TV. Just a good movie, that happened to be about Superman (and had memorable music) with some good action and characters. This one feels the same. You didn’t have to know much about the DCU to follow along or be delighted by it.
Plus it featured Cleveland SO heavily. My god! I even have a friend who was an extra in the film. He says he’s on screen twice but I didn’t catch him (crowd scenes). And Progressive Field! The place where Lois and Superman kiss at the end is real (The Arcade) and you best believe my boyfriend and I will be going to make out there this summer.
It was a rather long movie and I have a tendency to check out and start checking my watch after 90 minutes but I was not bored with this at all. I thought the plot was good, everything that every character did made sense, and it didn’t rely on too much “deus ex machina” for my taste. Like the Justice Gang going for the monster’s eyes. Yeah, that’s how it’s done!
One of my favorite lines,
Hawkgirl: “Help, I’m being blinked to death here!”
And I hope they’re willing to tell good stories again. I mean we already have the excellent Superman vs Lex Luthor movie made in 1978, why did they bother to make another one in 2025? Because good stories are worth retelling, that’s why.
