Suppose a genie gave you the ability to produce 100 pounds of any 'stuff' every day forever --

Day 1- one pound of $20 bills, (about $9000) 99 pounds of air.

Day 2- one pound of gold coins- 99 pounds of air.

And so on.

Pay bills with the cash. Bank some.

Hoard the gold.

Free groceries of course.

Stuff to donate.

I interpreted the OP as meaning you could vary what you ordered from day to day, but each day you needed to order 100 lbs of one thing.

If you could order an infinite variety of items every day, as long as the total weight equaled 100 lbs, that would make things much easier.

Yeah, I’m kinda amazed at how pedestrian many of the ideas are. My own first idea was to ask for various endangered/extinct animals. (Genie is ooooold. He was around before a lot of stuff was extincted, so he can make them.)

Some would be easy enough. Passenger pigeons existed all over America in the millions and 100 pounds would be enough for decent flock sizes. Pop one into every suitable climate area every week, maybe.

Dodo birds? Well, not sure they’d be as popular, but why not? One colony seeded on some remote island every month.

Bigger animals could be a problem, but how large do you think a new born Clouded Leopard or Tasmanian Tiger cub was? I’m sure plenty of rich people would be happy to own one as the latest status symbol.

And, yeah, I’ve seen the size of dinosaur eggs. If my genie is old enough, Jurassic Park here we come!

This is an advantage of living in Japan, which has a much higher percentage of cash purchases, about 60%, over other countries such the the US, which is closer to 15%.

100 lbs of 1,000 yen notes (the smallest notes) would be about US$290,000, so that would allow a comfortable lifestyle for things such as eating out, clothes and such without attracting as much attention as would happen in the States.

I have no idea how to do it, but it would be interesting to deal in rare earths to disrupt the monopoly that China has on them. It would be good way to get discovered, of course.

A hundred lbs. of any valuable will be traced back to you no matter how secret you try to keep the donations. People are greedy little assholes a lot of the time, and if they can’t have it they might make sure that no one can. Transportation of anything dangerous is not part of the game as far as I can tell so causing radioactive material to be sent to anyone in particular is probably out. Unless you live by a large river for the purpose of quiet dispersion hundred lbs. of water every day will be noticed. I still think a hundred lbs. of air is the safest, and thus the best, bet.

Wait a minute. The title uses the word “forever”, hinting that as long as you wish once every day you cannot die. The only thing that can cause you to die is failure to make that particular wish. Am I missing something here?

100 lbs of water is only 12 gallons. In your scenario, you are likely just happy to have the clean water each day.

That would be 1 cubic foot of sand. Not going to accomplish much.

If you order 100 pounds of gold, do you get troy pound or avoirdupois? A troy pounds is a little less than 2 cubic inches. A standard pound is a little over three cubic inches.

Gold Measurement Systems

  • Troy Pound: This system is used for precious metals like gold. One troy pound equals 12 troy ounces (about 373.24 grams).
  • Standard Pound: This system is used for everyday goods like food. One standard pound equals 16 standard ounces (about 453.59 grams).
  • The Ounce Difference: A single troy ounce is heavier (31.10 grams) than a standard kitchen ounce (28.35 grams).
  • Standard Conversion: Because the units differ, a standard 16-ounce physical scale pound of gold actually equals about 14.58 troy ounces.

Day 1 - $20 bills Twenties are the most ubiquitous denomination, because of ATMs. So they are least likely to be questioned if you pay with them constantly.
Day 2 - $20 bills in a different location.
Day 3 - 20 lbs each rice, flour, beef, chicken, salmon
Day 4 - 100 lbs canned baby formula - this is what food banks generally need most.
Day 5 - OH- (hydroxide ions). . . delivered to a certain address in DC. They will destroy the lungs of anybody there, then float up and break down methane in the atmosphere.
Day 6 - Various BBQ foodstuffs for the block party
Day 7 - OH deliveries begin to a short list of other people.

I considered buying land and then beginning to ask for construction materials. Maybe even build a wall around the whole place by requesting blocks of stone in a certain spot. But it turns out that a 100lb block of granite is only 10" square, so that would take too long. And 100lbs of concrete only yields about 1 cubic foot.

Sheesh! Stuff is heavy, ain’t it?

If someone wanted to live off the grid, in some cabin they built themselves, etc. This would be perfect.

You could wish for 100 lbs of twenties once and that could give you enough money to last, especially as you wouldn’t need much.

With a large freezer, you could keep your steaks good, and wish for potatoes as well.

As long as you had appropriate storage containers, this would perfect.

(bolding mine)
As they were marsupials, probably about the size of a jelly bean. Not sure newborn is the way to go!

I’m thinking of starting a plant nursery and that would be perfect; immediately multiply up plants, seeds, and produce free compost, water and pots. Then with the profits (topped up with a wodge of £20 notes or so as required), buy myself a big patch of degraded peat bog and produce sphagnum to restore it.

And maybe some lead so I can make myself a nice bunker for when one of you lot accidentally causes some kind of massive explosion.

One 6"x6"x7" block per day. You could build a bunker in a couple of years, I guess? I wonder how thick it needs to be to block radiation? Would a nanometer do it?

100lbs of water is 12 gallons. I can put 12 gallons of water down my bathtub every day at precisely 8am and nobody in the world would notice. I could put 12 gallons of water in my postage stamp backyard every day at 8am and nobody in the world would notice unless they watched me do it, and all they’d think is “Why is that idiot dumping 3 buckets of water on his yard every day? He got a leak or sumthin?”

Gold, diamonds, rare metals, that’s tough to fence large quantities without being caught. Currency is straight up counterfeiting.

Not necessarily. Cartels bury huge amounts of cash and it just sits there rotting in the ground. Who are we to question the genie’s methods?

We don’t know that the genie is manufacturing things - he could be a thief. “100 lbs of $20 bills sourced from people with a net worth of > $100,000”

How do you know that the genie isn’t just going to give you a hundred pounds of hundred dollar bills, all with the same serial number?

Okay, I’ll add “existing and unique” to my wish. Although “legitimate” would probably work also, as no legit bill has a serial number duplicate to another.

What is everybody going to spend all this cash and gold on? 90% of whatever you might want can just be wished for. Somebody is going to ask questions if you start buying big expensive stuff with cash (let alone gold or exotic elements).

Yeah, that was something I wondered. Even a single big cash (car or house or whatever) purchase raises eyebrows. So would dropping off a briefcase full of cash at a bank every single day.

I guess the idea is to put it into a massive pile and sleep on it?

A hundred pounds of “stuff” means material needs are largely, if not entirely, addressed, obviating the need for cash, except for scorekeeping (I suppose there are things like health care and other services that need paying for, so ‘some’ money is a good idea). So put any of that 100 pounds that you don’t personally need and put to use for other people, too.
