She did what he wanted her to do to immigrants, but when it turned out that the cruelty shocked people, he underbused her.

Apparently, he was displeased about Noem’s relationship with Corey Lewandowski and this had been brewing for some time. Whether he finally decided it was time or the abysmal public approval of DHS was the final straw, only he knows for certain

Strong disagree. The public people who are shocked are people who are not trump’s constituents. The only part of the public he cares about (and not very much), are quite happy with performative cruelty.
Note that trump’s caring about the public is only really trump caring about how much adulation he is receiving from that public. Their desires, and especially their well-being, do not matter. At all. But when the cheering stops, he notices that.
So far the fascists among the citizenry are still cheering for ICE. And trump.

Yeah, but with all these interviews, panels, town halls etc., the real follow-up question should be: “Does that mean you will vote for the Democrat the next time around, if the Republican is making the same promises Trump was?” Because the vast majority of them will continue to double down on “THIS time I’ll get what I want and it won’t hurt me”.
If such voters sit out the next couple of elections instead of voting MAGA, that would be fine.

Actually, people born in the 50s (which are probably the hippies you’re talking about) went in the other direction from most other demographic groups, and went more for Harris:

Maybe some, but I always get the feeling most of the Boomers who went Republican were not true “hippie protesters”, they were some of the “nice kids” who engaged the “counterculture” just to check out the sex, drugs and rock&roll and quickly went back and got jobs.
But, yeah, the safe money is on that children of a conservative will most likely grow up to be conservative, at least relative to their generation. It is learned behavior.
This is more like me. My siblings and I all became more and more liberal as we aged, and we’re all very liberal now.
