I think it’s quite likely that the ACLU (and Planned Parenthood and Democracy Docket and the NAACP and many other organizations) WILL be declared to be terrorist organizations.
But I think the Trumpists will think it necessary to have an overwhelming Event, likely involving a false-flag attack by a previously-established enemy such as Iran, as a pretext for declaring the domestic entities mentioned as terrorists. Americans already know that Iran has attempted to kill Trump. So make up an attack, complete with bombings and such, to start the process of declaring martial law. I’d bet that this is the plan.
Yes. There will be a lot of this. (And it will be good for their careers, so many will decide that this is the right position to take.)
There you go.
I agree. I would guess that a majority of those who voted for the Leopards-Eating-Faces Party care not a whit.
He declared a National Emergency? I’m seeing some 2020 Trump declarations relating to China and to COVID and to the International Criminal Court—but nothing establishing martial law. Can you provide support for what you’re claiming, here?
Except that they won’t have that power, because the Senate has already elected a Majority Leader who has absolutely no intention of doing away with the filibuster.
There will be no significant legislation coming out of this Congress unless it has bipartisan support.
I tend to differ. I’ve expressed my opinion before that it’s a mistake to lump the Trump crowd and the Republicans into a single entity. They have two different agendas.
Trump doesn’t care what happens to the country or the world after he’s gone. So he’d have no problem setting the world on fire.
But the Republicans are in it for the long term. The current crowd running the Republican party have been around for forty years now. And they plan on still being around forty years or more after Trump’s gone. They’re willing to use Trump as a diversion while they work on their own agenda. And unlike Trump, they know the value of keeping things quiet.
Presidents have relatively extensive discretionary powers to raise tariffs, subject to lawsuits that ensue challenging ostensible national security justifications. Most imports are inputs into the production process, not consumer goods. So companies will complain. And Trump will grant exceptions. If he feels like it. Trump loves arbitrary power psychologically, corruptly, and politically. Corporate America has been a surprisingly flaccid protector of democracy given its massive benefits to them, but this policy will bring to heel those who lack sufficient enthusiasm for Dear Leader.
Trump attempted to direct IRS audits at his enemies with mixed success. This potentially arbitrary and corrupt aspect of tariff policy hasn’t been discussed enough, though it was known before the election.
ETA: Border emergency in major immigration states with insufficiently cooperative local law enforcement, such as California and New York, would require the temporary suspension of voting in early November.
Evil Satanic Democrats Deep State Operatives trying to overthrow the holy Trump administration via subverting elections with their horde of cat-eating illegal immigrant voters.
They’d have no problem coming up with an “emergency”, it’s not like they’d care if it was stupid and implausible. I have my doubts they’d bother, but they could do it easily enough.
The Constitution is dead when the people supposed to enforce it are the ones who oppose it. And soldiers with orders to shut down elections make the opinion of the states moot.
Trump’s usefulness to those really running the show (Federalists, Heritage Soc, Proj 2025 etc) ended with this election. They know he’s an idiot, he will be 83 years old, if he lasts that long, and they don’t need him to continue with their plans to dismantle what’s left of the US to ensure their continued wealth and power. I am convinced that’s why Vance is VP, ready to step up when needed.
ETA: Sorry, I see that @Little_Nemo has expressed a similar opinion above that I should have acknowledged.
Except for the fact that the Republican party has turned into his personality cult, and none of them has shown any ability to divert any of that to themselves. He’s the glue that holds it together. When he dies they’ll still control the government but the party itself will probably be in chaos.
But one thing he didn’t change his mind on was the filibuster. Read the article I linked above - there doesn’t seem to be ANY support among the Republicans for it, because they know they’ll be the minority again one day.
As I’ve said, I strongly disagree. The Republican party is using Trump and the magas, not the other way around. And one of the biggest uses they’re getting out of him is keeping everyone’s focus on what Trump and the magas are doing and away from what the rest of the Republicans are doing. And the quiet work those Republicans are doing is a lot more dangerous than anything Trump is capable of.
Even with that glue, it’s been chaos. The Republicans have been unable to govern effectively with Trump at the helm. I expect we’ll see continued chaos for the next four years with very little in the way of effective governing and a lot of damage to various sectors of the country.
