I’ve read several articles where farmers and others that voted from Trump are saying he is hurting them but would still vote for him again (morons). I can’t read the article…does she also say she would vote for him again or is there finally an example of someone regretting and saying they wouldn’t vote for him again?
After reading the article, I don’t think she is willfully ignorant. She is young (24) and grew up with Trump-supporting (and, at least in some cases, deeply misogynistic) family, teachers, and neighbors. While she is college-educated, she appears to have been a first-generation student, and it’s not clear whether she’s ever lived or traveled outside of rural Michigan. This is someone with limited life experience and a very, very different epistemological universe than an upper-middle class person from a big city would have, even if they were the same age. I don’t mean to let her off the hook completely – she clearly was aware of, and troubled by, Trump’s behavior toward women and voted for him anyway – but honestly, it’s pretty normal for people her age to take most of their information and cues about what to believe from their family and friends. The ones who do serious research about political candidates instead of going by received opinion are the exception, not the rule.
On NPR they were interviewing some muslim from MI about that stupid Gaza video. He said he voted for Trump, but is now having second thoughts. Fucking idiot.
I heard that. I found myself yelling at the radio.
I mean, when you dig into the comments section of the super-MAGA sites, they openly talk about how all Muslims are evil, and cheer the idea of Israeli ethnic cleansing [I want to be clear I’m not accusing Israel of that, I know this isn’t the place- I’m saying they WANT Israel to do it]
As has often been pointed out, Trump got to the White House eight years ago, was running two years before that, and was making noise about running four years before that. This woman was ten when he first really came on the national political scene; she’s never known a political climate in which his spray-tanned mug wasn’t in it. For a lot of younger voters, as far as they understand it, he’s A Politician and they don’t have a full grasp of what a deviation (deviant?) he is, and how This Is Not Flippin’ Normal.
For all she knows, everyone running for POTUS is typically an addled-brained octogenarian, or a smart woman of color that is ragged on constantly by the adults in her life and the “news” network they’re glued to.
Once again: not excusing her. And until the tariffs that are supposed to come into effect next week kick my country’s economy in the solar plexus and I’ve got bigger things to worry about, I also have next to no sympathy for this dingbat or her asshole civics teacher, and I hope they both get shock doctrined into facing reality.
No. She knew who she was voting for when she stepped into that voting booth. She’s had the better part of a decade to make up her mind. And she did.
Those fifteen minutes in the voting booth? That was just for her to try and convince herself that she could vote for Trump and still be a good person.
Well, she was wrong about that, too, but she probably still doesn’t realize it. And I suspect never will. Trump voters are masters in self-deception, even if the rest of us can see right through their self-serving justifications.
On the question of sympathy…
I don’t enjoy seeing anyone suffer. And additionally lots of people didn’t vote for Trump, and probably many who voted for Trump were just badly misinformed. A lot of individuals don’t deserve to suffer.
But…I really think it’s for the best long term if this administration is a car crash into a tire fire. It’s necessary medicine.
I’m seeing several talking heads saying that Democrats need to listen to the concerns of Trump voters and have good policy solutions for them. Fuck that – that’s what Dems did last time, and every time, and all it does it let the ratchet of stupidity continue. (Plus I’ve heard a few say the left got “baited” on issues like trans when taking the bait apparently means just treating people like humans).
This time, nah, I’m going to call a spade a dumbshit, and honestly I think some straight talk from Dems wouldn’t hurt (not advocating they use actual expletives though).
There will be different levels of about-face. State representatives and government need to think of their own ass, so need to at least claim to be pushing back against policies that hurt the state. That’s not the same thing as turning away from MAGA it’s just normal political calculus.
Actually that’s probably an interesting thing happening behind the scenes. All these self-serving MAGA politicians will be saying “Great idea with all these cuts! Down with government waste! But can my state be an exception?” and the problem will be every (red) state will be saying that.
What really stops me from enjoying their suffering is knowing others who don’t deserve it are suffering alongside them. While I have a quantum of sympathy for these Trump supporters who are suddenly finding bite marks where their faces used to be, it’s with the realization that they brought this on themselves. Any reasonable person could have seen what was going to happen if Trump were elected in 2024.
They sound like typical Heavy Metal. ‘Act like a warrior,’ ‘Turn up the music,’ ‘Purify your mind’… the sort of things that are attractive to a certain demographic. And then their Trump-supporting fans find out they don’t really want everyone to become warriors, and they don’t really want Trump to take over the world.
Uh, what? I can think of a couple of bands that say ‘act like a warrior’ and most of those are tunge in cheek. I will admit we do like to turn up the music though, but I have no idea what ‘purify your mind’ means in regards to metal.
As for Iron Savior, their music is almost all sci-fi type lyrics, their whole first album is about a space ship that has connections to Atlantis.
I’d say most metal heads are liberal, at least a lot that I know are. I would be upset if I wanted to go to the show and they canceled, but at least I would understand it.
Given all of the amazingly insane shit that’s happened in the last five weeks, that item is probably pretty low on the list of things that the Democrats are trying to talk about.
