I don’t mind the Democrats hammering about tips and overtime as a matter of illustrating Republicans not keeping promises, but these are moronic things to fight for. You should get taxed based on what you earn, what difference should it make if your income was tips or overtime?

Until they change the way they vote, publicly acknowledging their error is worth jack shit. Talk is cheap. I’ve send dozens of sob story news articles about people who voted for Trump and then got their faces bit off and then at the end they say they still wouldn’t have changed the way they voted.
IIRC, the waiver on overtime would’ve been tied to a change in the rules defining overtime, it wouldn’t kick in until after the employee worked 160 hours in a 4 week period.
This would save employers a ton of money, as they’d be able to schedule so they hardly ever needed to pay out any overtime. And the employee might save a few bucks if they ever actually worked overtime, but they’d be doing lots of work for straight pay that would’ve previously required overtime pay.
And the elimination on taxes on tips would both reduce reporting requirements for employers and allow employers to pay less without reducing take home pay. The employees would lose out in the long run, though…… as the reduction in taxable income would screw them when it came time to collect Social Security.
And the “no taxes on Social Security” largely benefits people with substantial supplemental income, either from working or other taxable income sources. If SS is your only income, it’s already effectively tax free.
I say effectively because if you have a higher payout, a portion of it is taxable, but once you file taxes the standard deduction would pull it down to a place where you have no tax liability.
So these are all disguised giveaways to employers and higher income retirees.
And come 2026/2028 they’ll still be headed for the polls under the Received Teaching from RW media and socials that OMG if the Dems get in we’re going to have Wokemaggedon, what choice do we have left but vote for whoever’s the MAGA guy in the primary and general.

Bingo. As a volunteer tax preparer, I can attest to this. This is true of probably more than 85% of the tax returns we prepare which have SS income.
I believe the concept is more insidious than just that. Corporations will start imposing mandatory gratuities on every fucking thing they can and off-book the revenue, which is not going specifically to a person. You might be able to make a transaction without providing the business with a “tip”, but it will be drawn out and fraught. Eliminating taxes on tips will ultimately end up being another corporate tax break.

In light of the Zelenskyy meeting today in which Trump abandoned Ukraine, I wonder how the congresswoman from Indiana’s 5th is feeling about acquiescing to Trump on the budget vote yesterday? I mean, it’s not like being a Ukrainian immigrant gives Victoria Sparta any sort of relevant perspective to leverage, especially when she was apparently the final deciding vote. Guess she really thought maybe it wasn’t her face on the menu.
As mentioned in a parallel thread, Spartz already voted against giving aid to Ukraine months ago, and explained her “reasoning” in the same breath as saying she had family members who had died and some who were fighting on the front lines.
To give a flavor, one part of her reasoning was “I know what a dictatorship is. Putin is not [a dictator]. But Obama and Biden are”
I don’t know what to make of her to be honest. Other MAGA faithful are grifters or have obvious mental conditions like sociopathy. I can’t diagnose what she has.
