More fun than salting slugs!
There’s a straightaway on the north side of the DC Beltway, outer loop (westbound), where the Mormon Temple is straight ahead of you for a mile or two. Other than it’s not emerald in color, it looks like Oz.
There’s an overpass across the Beltway along this stretch. For years, it used to bear the graffito, “Surrender Dorothy”.
It’s still sort of there. The words have been painted over, but if you know what you’re looking for, you can still see the “Surrender Dorothy”-shaped blotches. (it’s on the side a railway bridge, just west of the Georgia Ave. exit.)
I still yell ‘SURRENDER DOROTHY’ every time I drive past there.
Don’t ask me why.
Surrender, Dorothy = Give yourself up, Dorothy, and I’ll let your friends live.
Surrender Dorothy = Tinman, et al, give Dorothy up to save your own sorry hides!
Did anyone besides me think of the movie “After Hours” when reading the thread title?
Nope.
Trust me, the Witch just had a bum rap. Read Wicked by Gregory Maguire for further details (or if you’re in/near NY, go see the play - it’s amazing!). I’m off to listen to the soundtrack one more time…
Dammit, the Mormon Temple rail crossing was just what I was thinking of, too. I lived not 5 miles from there for a good chunk of nearly 20 years!
I’d say you have to get up pretty early in the morning to stay ahead of me. Except you do get up pretty early in the morning, and look how much good it does you!
I know - that’s why you’re moving to Nowhere, Ohio. Sure, just leave all your friends hundreds of miles behind, simply because you want to have a chance to see your kids grow up. You call those priorities?? Geez.
There used to be a band called Surrender Dorothy. I don’t know if they were just local Chicago or if they had a Big Contract. That’s all I got.
For those who don’t live in the DC area, here’s the Mormom Temple. The resemblance to Oz is even more striking when you see it from the Beltway, since it rises out of the greenery ahead of you. Here’s a night shot from the Beltway.
You’re just bitter, RT.
You know you and Mrs Firefly really want to follow me to Marietta. Think how much fun we’d have together!
EEK! Where are the flying monkeys?
