Survivor 12/12/04

Twila’s son is 23, so he should be (reasonably) self-sufficient. While I realize being a road repair worker isn’t upper-class, it certainly isn’t minimum wage… is it? I have always been under the assumption these were union jobs and they par fairly well.

Jenna from the original Survivor worked in a daycare (among other jobs) and had very young twin daughters.

I assumed there were several minimum wage type with small children on this show.

Just because she’s a single mother doesn’t mean she’s any more deserving of the money than anyone else. She made the choice to have children and live the life she is; that’s no one’s fault but her own (to her credit, I never heard her state that she deserved the money more than anyone else). Financials should not play a role in Survivor.

Incidentally, I laughed like crazy at Jeff’s “hack through the jungle with a machete/parachute into the desert/ride the motorcycle into town” sequence. Honestly, do they really think they’re fooling anyone with that?

My comment was directed to kka who said about Twila “Granted she is a hard worker - but, certainly she isn’t one of the worst off survivors ever.” I never said she was more deserving because she was a single parent. I justed wanted to know who was worse off financially if he didn’t think Twila was bad off.

Twila is a single parent and was up front about why she was on the show. She was trying to win to better her situation and that of her son. Her son is in his early 20s, but you don’t stop being a parent just because your children become adults. As long as you’re able, you’ll always try to take care of your kids no matter how old they get.

As far as deserving the money more than anyone else, I think she needed it more than most, but that’s not the same thing. And frankly, the person who wins the money isn’t always the most deserving. I can think of a few (Jenna, Tina, Amber…) who didn’t deserve the money.

That was my experience. I’ve watched all the Survivor episodes, and this one was really tough for me to get into. Once the first few folks were weeded out, though, it was great fun. Chris is the comeback player of Survivor history. He was supremely lucky not to have been voted off in the first TC, but he played a great game once the merge happened. Great show!

I’m glad Chris won, of the four left, as I’ve been rooting for him since Chad was voted out. Though both Eliza and Twila have played pretty good games, he’s been outplaying others since day 1.

I didn’t see the show, so I just want to ask: did the jury give the reasons for the way they voted? I’m particularly interested in Ami’s reasoning for voting for Twila - after all, she hated both of them equally.

I agree with you about Eliza’s being stupid to be so shocked by Chris’s betrayal – not only was his choice to go to final three with Scout and Twila the obvious one, but Eliza had seen Chris betray Julie similarly just 3 days before. Who the hell did Eliza screw to get into law school? I swear she was one of the stupidest contestants ever – not to mention her apparent conviction that she is the white-hot center of the Universe. I got awfully tired of all these silly girls crying that their 'feeelings were hurt." Boo hoo, you bunch of dumbasses. But, please, “two old ladies?” Twila is 41!

Thjs was discussed during the post-game show. Ami said that is wasn’t a gender thing ( ), but instead it was because Twila played her when Ami thought she couldn’t be played.

I’m glad that Twila turned the self-righteousness back on that piece of shit Sarge. Yes, she lied. Yes, she swore on her son’s name. But that’s between HER AND HER SON . Not some loser suffering from sour grapes. When that asshole stood up there and tore into her, I wanted to kick a hole in the TV. (What was that stuff about sending her son to hell?? Is that what swearing on somebody’s name means?)

Personally, I thought Twila played a harder game than Chris did. Chris didn’t start playing until after the merge, whereas Twila was scheming from the get go. Chris had a good deal of luck on his side. He played a good game, but I think he had it easier. And Twila, despite her age, was able to give him a run for his money on those last challenges. Go girl.

I grew tired of his “these women” comments. Yeah yeah, you’re the only guy. Women are all evil and guys are all good and stuff. We GET IT! Was I the only one exasperated with his interviews? I knew he was going to win since he seemed to have all the quotable quotes. I liked the game better when the teams weren’t guys vs. women. They seem to foster the worst kind of prejudice and gamesmenship.

Amy won some cool points back. Not only was she able to give Twila her kudos for outwitting her, but she was able to see through the BS spewing from Chris.

And I thought Scout’s comment about forgiveness was good too.

(Did anyone else notice that there seemed to be a lot of “backwoodsy” dialect last night? There was a lot of “He come over’s” and “I seen it’s”. Richard Hatch was probably rolling his eyes.)

I have to admit, that was actually worse than Thailand’s transition from tribal council to reunion show, when Peachy Probst jetskied from Thailand to NYC. I don’t know whether he went the long way around or took the Panama Canal, though…

what was Eliza thinking when she said in the interview portion, “I totally trust Chris. It’s so good to have someone to trust…I know he’l take me along…”. How dumb can you be?

What pisses me off is that once again, the jury members (except Ami and Scout) are willing to give a free pass to a lying, cheating, back-stabbing MAN but are shocked and dismayed when the same qualities are exhibited in a strong, independent WOMAN. Sexism is alive and well in 2004.

I was rooting for Twila at the end. I like her because she needed the money and was willing to lie and cheat for it, but not willing to CRY (or apologize to Eliza) for it. Life has made her hard around the edges, but you can tell that she has a good heart. What she doesn’t realize now, but hopefully will someday, is that her struggles have probably given her son something that few kids in America have these days: character. How many 19 year old boys would get up in front of a national audience and tell everyone that he loves his mom? She’ll get $100,000. Good for her.

I get the impression that Chris would have sucked everyone’s genitals to get the million bucks and my opinion of him was really lowered. His speech to Twila that she should not take any crap from the jury members (so she would alienate the jury and make him look better by comparison) was so thinly disguised, even my 10 year old could see through it. I have a sinking feeling that he’s going to be one of people who blows through his money in 5 years.

Jeff’s undisguised disdain for Chris and undisguised admiration for Twila was comedic.

My opinion of Ami and Scout went up quite a bit. They were able to see through Chris’ bullshit. They were both smart, intuitive players. Too bad Julie and LeeAnn were so easily manipulated.

LeAnn: She was HURT by Twila’s deception? That’s such bullshit. Had she been loyal to her alliance with Scout and Twila, she would have been in the Final Four. Instead she and Ami chose to replace Scout/Twila (they told each player it was the other) with Julie. Her own deception sunk her.

Sarge: He tried to do the Susan Hawk speech, but he just doesn’t have it in him. I’m glad he saw what an ass he was being and back-pedaled at the end. The mark of maturity is the ability to admit when you’re wrong. Good for him.

Eliza: I’m so glad she didn’t win the million bucks. Of all the people there, most were gracious and surprisingly introspective. She was the exception. Twila was right on: Eliza has a lot of growing up to do.

Julie: I was surprised by her emotion. I’m glad that she finally saw Chris for who she was.

Dolly: She’s a doll.

The pretty boys were no surprise. Hope the producers focus more on substance than looks next time.

Rory: Gracious loser.

Chad: He survived cancer and kicked ass. He already won the lottery.

Bubba: I just don’t feel he had much of a personality.

She’s not in yet. Who did she screw to get into Syracuse? Unfortunately not me yet.

Was this season so boring that only 31 posts have been made in the 11 hours since the winner was announced?

Palau. I’m kinda hoping that the shocking surprise is geriatic Japanese soliders who were informed that the war has ended raiding the camps.

Now the important question: Who is posing for Playboy? They could do another Ami pictorial, but I doubt it. I’m hoping for Dolly, but that’s not happening. I’ll except Julie who IMHO looked all sorts of fine last night.

I loved Chad’s line in the reunion about not wanting sympathy and then wanting it when it looked like he was going to get voted out. A funny, warm moment.

I liked him.

As for the outcome, am I the only one who ROOTS for the sleaziest sack of crap out there? Getting mad at people for lying and deceiving in Survivor is like getting mad at a poker player for bluffing.

Once again, we have a chorus of people saying “I kept my integrity!” And once again they aren’t sitting on the front row!

I think Chris played well. I think he made a few unneccesary mistakes (why show Eliza up when you vote her off?) but he won 3 of the last 4 ICs, chose the right path of elimination and picked the right person to sit next to him.

And you know what? For the first time in Survivor, I don’t fault ANYONE for their vote.

Sarge- Yeah. We didn’t see through that clever little “test”! There was never any doubt in my mind that he would pick Chris.

Chad- A class act all the way. He was proud that Chris stuck it out til the end.

Leann- A little sour grapes, but she did say she was impressed Chris changed the game and beat the odds. And her “two-face” mode was set on “hottie” last night!

Ami- I truly believe she voted based on gameplay. Twila burned her and instead of sending a sour grape vote to Chris, she respected good play. I was impressed with her last night all around,

Julie- Why so weepy? You’ll get 500K when you pose for Playboy. Seriously, I thought you were the swing vote (I thought Leann would go for Twila). I am still unsure of her thought process. Chris did say a nice thing about you in the retrospective.

Eliza- Your hatred of Twila made you a greater asset to Chris on the jury. A hate vote. You never even considered whether Chris was the better player.

Scout- Stuck with the alliance that got you to the final three. Nothing wrong with that.

That should be “weren’t informed.” :smack:

Sorry, I gotta call bullshit, no offense. And not just on your comment, but on all of the “Chris is a lying bastard” rhetoric going on.

This is Survivor. From season one, episode one, lying and backstabbing have been the name of the game. Either you do it and win, or don’t and lose. There are few exceptions.

Chris navigated through some of the toughest waters a Survivor player has ever seen. He was the last of the men versus a contingent of women who were adament about having 4 women at the end - and he not only made into the Final Four, he WON. Most people who scramble to save their hides extend their misery for 3 to 6 days at the most. He extended his stay for 18-21 days, including Day 39. He was the swing man on 2 different alliances - a position that has typically been a death sentence in the past. As the swing man, you have to court both sides. That’s what gets you in trouble. But Chris managed to do so without the other side finding out - and this was with FIVE people on the island, not fifteen!

Did Chris lie to Julie? You bet. Did he use his relationship that he built with Julie to do it? Yup. Did he need to do that? Maybe not. But I took his comments to Julie in his final plea to be genuine, as did his comment about what he had learned from everyone on the jury (all of them possessing a higher element of compassion and willingness to set the game aside for a friendship). Bringing her hat back was a nice touch, and thoughtful. All the accusations from the jury of Chris shovelling bullshit smacked of nothing but sour grapes and bitterness.

Twila played the strategy part of the game fantastically, but she absolutely sucked ass at the alliances/jury-courting aspect of it.

And that should be “accept” not “except.” :smack: :smack:

This does not bode well for finals weeks, that it doesn’t.

I didn’t get the disdain vibe. I think Jeff was being hard on Chris so that the others would feel more comfortable, and be able to laugh about it. Made for a better reunion show. And that night Chris could take the criticism since he just won a million bucks.

I also don’t like it when people use the intergrity argument. In this game integrity is a luxury for those who have strong alliances. Amy was all honest because she felt safe, but I bet if she was on the outsider group it would have been a different story. How else could Chris and Twila advance without lying? They played the hand they were dealt.

First of all, I’d like to say that that was one damned fine-looking bunch of people up there. John K. kinda shot himself in the foot if he was doing this to get exposure so he’d get more modeling contracts, because the two big guys in the back row blew him right off the stage, and half the women are going to get offers before he does.

Second, I think Probst has some contempt for Chris’s play style because every season somebody comes along who tries to play the game honest, and they end up getting smoked or having to start lying, and I think Probst maintains a shred of hope that this is actually possible, that somebody could come into Survivor as a born leader and get all the way to the end on charisma and talent rather than a good poker face and a fast lie. I get the feeling he’s not really happy that he keeps rewarding lying and cheating, but if it makes for good TV, he’s stuck with it.

umm… you do realize the jury was 5/2 women/men, right? And even if you discount Ami and Scout, it’s still 3/2. Just trying to figure out where you’re pointing the finger of accusatory blame, here…

And what was up with the chump pimping for Home Depot?

I thought for a second that Probst was going to overlook the back benchers all together, but he gave them their 15 seconds.

Last night got me thinking what a GREAT villian Mia could have been.
