Survivor 5/1/08

I laughed out loud the first time we saw Eric and the description said “Ice Cream Scooper”.

Oh, I know! He will never live that down, I’m sure. If I were one of his friends, I would totally call him “scooper” from now on.

I beg your pardon.

I’m new to this show so this might be a bit of a dumb question, but during the elimination, why did they just pick off the injured player? Why not blind side one of the other two healthy girls and leave Alexis as easy prey for the next challenge or possibly sent home by medical? I suppose they might have just done it to be nice, but it seems like they had a chance to effectively get rid of two people instead of one.

It was a process. They began with Ozzy, allying together to use their superior numbers to eliminate the physically strongest players (in order to increase their odds of winning immunity challenges). This week was a part of that process. (There’s a possibility that a slightly injured James can outrun or outsmash any of the women.) Alliances like this are common on the show, and there have been female vs male alliances (and vice-versa) before (including one that backfired when the lone remaining man won against all the women). What’s different this time, however, is the lack of “Pagonging”. Pagong happens when two tribes merge and one has a numerical superiorty. Typically, the higher numbers win. This time, those tribes were equal and even after Faves got a numerical advantage, they broke apart and formed new alliances with the Fans. It has been a very good season, to me at least.

(ETA: They seldom do anything just to be nice.)

Still, wouldn’t Alexis and her bum knee be better to keep around for the next immunity challenge? She is certainly, at this point, a much weaker competitor than Cirie or Natalie. Though I guess this way they don’t put another person on the jury with a payback vote in mind.

Since it’s on On-Demand, this is the first season of Survivor I’ve ever really given a chance, but I got to admit, I am enjoying it quite a bit.

2 possibilities - by playing the HII and getting rid of one of the fan women, Amanda has pretty much assured herself a spot in the final 3. Whether she wants to keep it herself, Cirie & Parv, or shake it up a bit, she saw Alexis as a greater threat (more personable, less hated by jury) than Natalie. There’s no real reason to think Alexis would be pulled out of the game for her injury - it’s not an infection or a disease - as long as she thinks she can walk, it’s unlikely they’ll extract her with only a couple of days to go. Amanda may have thought Alexis was so much a bigger threat than Natalie that blindsiding her was worth it.

2 - As a search for past Survivor threads will amply show, the person in the driver’s seat often makes a poor decision, whether viewed subjectively at the time of the decision, or objectively at the end of the game.

Yes, that would probably have been a smarter play.

Not necessarily. Alexis is well-liked by everyone and as a motivational speaker, could easily talk up her role as a mastermind to the jury.

On the other hand, Natalie is all-but-hated by everyone but Alexis. Keeping her around is the smart play.

This is also the best move for Amanda as it busts up the Parvati-Alexis-Natalie triangle and Parvati slinks back to #2 behind Amanda. It’s also good for Parvati as she can play the ouster off as Amanda’s idea (since she had the HII) while at the same time getting a guaranteed vote (and probably two with Natalie) on the jury.
