Survivor 9/25

Big muscles, small heart. What a coward. Ryan was the right vote (gee buddy could you have prepped a little before coming).

I really love the reawrd challenges changes- they go from being a pointless part of the game designed to show off the sponsors to an important perk (and chance to piss off the potential jury members- or your own team). Nicely done!

This might be the earliest Burnett is had to spike the challenges to protect a team if Morgan blows another set of challenges. Gee, what would you take from them now-- sand?

Osten is a wuss, and is full of crap too. If he really wanted to go, he wouldn’t have voted for Ryan S. He’s just hamming it up for attention. Men are already stereotyped as being big babies when they get sick. Osten is working on getting us known for being babies at the mere thought of being sick. Give me a break.

I think Christy may just be the next Mary Heart. No, not as a psuedo-reporter, as a TV personality whose voice gives people seizures.

And go go Jeff with the editorials. Love it.
Hagrid had it together just fine, of course. Lousy commercial editors.

Anyone notice Ryan S. quoting Strongbad? The treemail, the treemail, uh uh the treemail.

Ryan O. (fat Ryan?) did just as bad at the challenge. Let’s see, leave the mask… oh wait turns out you can’t see underwater. Whoops.

I feel for the scout troop out there somewhere that just saw its leader’s panties.

I think they’ve edited around Darrah so far because they want to have a least one person who seems likeable on Morgan. She’s plenty cute, but from what little we’ve heard of her and the world’s thickest accent, she doesn’t seem very nice. Better to be seen and not heard.

I’m not sure if you’re aware of this, but players can’t vote for themselves. Who do you think he should have voted for?

Anyone else but Ryan S. He knew that’s who everyone was voting for - if three people had voted for Osten, and he voted Darrah, there would have been a tie and he would have had a chance to go home to his medicine cabinet. Instead he voted with the crowd, ensuring that a tie wouldn’t happen.

Well, to be fair, we don’t know that he knew he was voting with the crowd. He had also told Tijuana that he wanted to go home…maybe he figured she was going to vote for him.

Speaking of ties, we haven’t had a tie in a long time…has there been a tie since the incident with Neleh and Paschal? Previous ties had been settled by going with the person had received the most prior votes, but in that situation, if the tie couldn’t be settled amongst the group, they turned it over to chance, and Paschal got booted even though he wasn’t involved in the tie. I wonder how it would have gone if there had been a tie this time around.

Heh, Slacker, I sense a TWoP cut-and-paste here somewhere.

I felt really bad for young Ryan. Okay, granted, he was a truly limp noodle physically and I still can’t figure out how on EARTH TPTB thought he’d be an actual player in this game, but he came across as a nice kid who wanted to do the tribe-togetherness thing and give it an honest shot. I hope he at least had a LITTLE fun.

Papa Tiger’s first thought, upon Sandra carting off the tarp, was, “I wonder how many times that tarp is going to change hands before the end?”

Biggirl, Hagrid’s flip-out was a deceptive piece of editing. Shawn, after having had it explained to him at some length by Rupert that the head of their fishing spear was loose and he needed to make SURE it was on tight, went out fishing with it, and the Amazing Editors showed him walking along trailing it behind him so that the loose spear head was dragging on the bottom. Cut to him coming to shore to admit that he lost the head, didn’t know where he had lost it, he looked for an hour but the tide kept sucking him so hard he couldn’t look properly.

Hagrid has some snide comments about him losing it in “the tub” that is their little bay, and then dons the swim mask (that they got at the reward challenge – good looting on Drake’s part, to keep the mask!), and then went out and swam a grid pattern around the bay looking for the spear head – and actually FOUND it. So his screams that we thought were anguish were actually howls of triumph.

And best of all, when he came out of the water with the spear head, Shawn asked him where he found it, and he replied, “In the OCEAN!”

Gotta love that Rupert!!

lol  I knew someone would notice that. Show some respect though, I naturally posted it here first, then C&P’d it to TWoP and my own board. I thought my comments were just too damn clever for one place.

Dang, you snuck in there and I didn’t even see that you’d asked questions!

MamaTiger answered some of them, but here’s some more info:

The Immunity Challenge (IC) had each team selecting three members to hand over to the other team as captives. They were then placed on a raft, one sitting with his/her hands tied, and two others hanging off the raft with their arms extended across the raft and hands tied to a pole (I think…they may have been tied to each other). The team then had a rope/pulley system with which to move the raft with the opposing team’s members out to sea, while the tied up members tried to free themselves. The further out they team could put the opposing team’s members by the time they freed themselves, the better, since once they were freed, they needed to take their ropes and the pole from the raft and swim back to shore for the next step. After reaching shore, they needed to detach a clue from the pole, open it and determine two compass points that were written there and match them to a set of poles laid out in a circle in the sand. Once they figured out which poles were represented by the compass points in the clues, they attached the ropes to those poles and where the ropes crossed in the circle, they had to dig for a team flag. They then had to attach the team flag to the pole they brought from the raft, carry it over to a final area and hoist the pole.

As for how the challenge went between the teams, the Morgan tribe actually freed themselves and got back to shore with their stuff first, but then had difficulty opening the clue with the compass points. Drake wasn’t that far behind, so the delay basically cost them the IC. Drake had their flag pole up while Morgan was still digging in the sand for their flag.

Each week (except for the opening week, where there’s too much getting established going on), there is also a Reward Challenge (RC). The RC this week consisted of 4 members taking turns swimming out into the bay and retrieving a piece of treasure from the ocean floor and placing it in a treasure chest. Once all pieces were in the chest, all 7 members (Drake had to sit someone out, since Morgan had voted someone out last week) had to rush out and pull the chest to shore. Ryan S of Morgan was the first out for their team and he couldn’t stay under water long enough to locate the treasure item, and Drake took a huge early lead. By the time Morgan sorted themselves out, Drake was just about done. The reward, btw, was a shovel and the first of 3 clues to a buried treasure that apparently has some supplies to help the team survive…I’d assume it has some food and clothing. Also, Jeff Probst revealed that part of every RC from here on out is going to be the option of the winning team to visit the losing team’s camp and loot one item. Sandra went to Morgan’s tribe and since they had basically nothing of value that Drake didn’t already have (since Drake shopped so well in the village), she took their tarp, which was the essence of their shelter.

Skinny Ryan got voted out because he had no alliances with the people who count on Morgan, and he was basically why Morgan lost the RC challenge this week. I wouldn’t look for Andrew (Fearless Leader) being voted out until after the merge. The merge, btw, comes about halfway through the game when the tribes get a bit smaller…they then merge to one big team, and instead of having team RCs and ICs, they move to individual events. It’s at that point that you’ll see physically strong people being voted out, since that’s the only way for the weaker to survive at that stage. While they’re still in team mode, physical strength will trump pretty much all else, which is why Morgan chose to keep Osten in spite of him being a giant pantywaist and wanting to go home.

Man, I’m long-winded, huh?

Not a criticism, just rather pleased with myself for being that observant. Which is probably not a good thing, since I really SHOULD be working this evening. You’ll note a certain repetitiveness in a portion of my comments, too, although I didn’t do an actual cut-and-paste.

Papa Tiger and I were just talking about how smart Rupert is playing the game. He only pirated stuff that wouldn’t get noticed when back in the village, he allied himself with the women when the men (Jon in particular) were being drunk and obnoxious, he’s providing so much food with his fishing that we heard tonight the words you NEVER expect to hear on Survivor, “I don’t think I can eat another bite, I’m so full!”, and he suggested they not try to hurt the Morgan team too badly when raiding their camp, clearly thinking ahead to post-merge. I really hope he goes far! (And I’m extremely relieved to see he has on undies under that skirt! :D)

Drat! First double post ever. I’ve tried so hard not to do it. Stupid hamsters, making me think it hadn’t gone through the first time!

Dread Pirate Hagrid already had the mask last week.

Ryan S. seemed to have his head on his shoulders (ha!), but fell victim to the First Rule of Survivor: Always be in the majority. Lil might be next, but the Morgan Majority might want to turn on itself.

The preview makes it look like Jon is toast. Therefore, Jon is a distraction. If, as I think is very likely, Drake goes to TC, the person who’s really on the chopping block is either Dread Pirate Hagrid or Shawn. I still expect a matter-antimatter collision that kills them both, eventually.

A good episode. Morgan’s still in meltdown mode. Based on past experience, I guess this means one of the Morgans will eventually win. Maybe the Wizard gives Osten some courage next week and he goes on to take it all. It’d serve the rest of the fools on his tribe for keeping him.

The Morgans also handled the “raid” about as poorly as they’ve handled everything else. Maybe they could have negotiated some kind of deal with Sandra but they didn’t even bother trying. And then when she said she was taking the tarp, they told her to take it down herself and then complained she wasn’t careful enough doing so. And her motivation for being careful would be what?

Speaking of the tarp - I was disappointed that we didn’t see Drake’s reaction to its arrival.

Fantastic episode tonight. Some of my favorite highlights:

Sandra taking the tarp and tearing up the shelter when Morgan refused to help, then she says “You gotta do what you gotta do” and Andrew says “Not necessarily”. Tijuana was petty for not letting Sandra use the knife. Hell, they’ve been getting their asses kicked since day one, at least show some dignity in defeat.

Badass Rupert finding the spear head in the water. The guy doesn’t hesitate to turn to piracy for the sake of his tribe, catches enough fish for everyone, then even recovers the spear head after someone else lost it! The guy is a franchise player. I really hope he wins the million.

Jeff refusing to let Lil sugarcoat her crappy tribe’s performance (an “A” for effort?!) at tribal council.
*
Lil: I think we need to do some more fishing.
Jeff: That’s it?*

Christa referring to Shawn as the biggest puss she’d ever seen.

Rupert’s joy and exhiliration at being on the island, while the younger and more physically fit Osten whines that he wants to go home and worries about catching pneumonia. Is that guy a hypochondriac or what? He must’ve said he was going to catch pneumonia at least three times tonight!

Oh, another thing, did anyone else catch Scout Lady saying “this troop” instead of “this tribe” when Jeff asked her to grade them at tribal council? The woman needs help!

If that was a ploy by Olsten, it was a stupid one. He was in no danger of being voted off and will now be remembered as the big cry baby.

What, exactly, does Andrew do in his role as leader? I mean besides foment dissent? Organize? Nope. Plan? Nope. Keep spirits up? Nope. I truely dislike him.

Yes, it was a good episode, and this is a good series, but…

I’m getting pretty sick of the Hopeless Black Man thing not just in Survivor but in RTV generally. By now, it seems that this whole business is deliberate. The potential contestants are put through excrutiating psychological evaluations, and there ought to be a better batting average than we’re seeing. Osten has the character of a spoiled sissy brat. It’s unfortunate that someone who tested higher was denied an opportunity to compete. It’s a theme that I’m tired of seeing repeated over and over: lazy/arrogant/thieving Black Man creates drama by whining/insulting/stealing. Damn. Just plain damn.

I thought it was great when Sandra asked if she could use a knife, and Tijuana didn’t just say no, she jumped up and ran to guard them. I don’t like that woman.

I wonder if there are rules against hiding items before a reward challenge? If not, if I was on Drake I would be burying the spear gun and the water jugs.

About that spear…

I wondered why they couldn’t make a new head for it. Bamboo has been around a lot longer than stainless steel, and bamboo and sticks were used in these things a lot longer than metal. I would have made new barbed spikes and lashed them to the pole as well as I could with whatever was available.

Of course, my approach would have been the wrong one given that Hagrid did find the spearhead; but at least it would probably have worked. Making a new head would have been a viable alternative had the metal head not been found, and someone should have thought of it.

I couldn’t believe he found the head. Amazing.

Regarding the RC, that was pretty stupid of the Morgan team members to not use the mask. A clue: If you’re looking for something, it helps to be able to see it. And what? Has Ryan S. not been swimming before? It looked as if he couldn’t get more than a meter under water when he was trying to get to the chest. Fat is bouyant. A skinny guy like Ryan should have been able to dive better.

When Sandra went to Morgan to plunder an item, she couldn’t believe they didn’t have a water jug. (IIRC, she was told to get their water jug. Failing that, ISTR that someone said she should get the tarp. I could be wrong about that, though.) I was thinking that if I were in her position, I would have taken a token item. But if she was instructed to get the tarp, then that would have gotten her in trouble with her teammates. But then, I think her teammates thought she would be a good one to vote off later; that’s why they sent her. Because they knew the other team would be pissed off at her after the merge.

I thought it was good of Hagrid to say, “We don’t need to hurt them.” A Good heart, has that big one.
