Survivor: Cook Islands Ep. 3 - "Flirting and Frustration"

Just a note on that, because it seriously occurred to me as it happened last night: I think Cecelia unwittingly helped take Candice to at least the Final Six by telling her about Billy’s confession of LOVE in front of everyone else on the tribe. I think she’s going to be able to avoid torch-snuffage on the strength of people wanting to make sure there are plenty of people at Loser Lodge already to get between her and Billy. I’m also pretty sure that this aspect of it never occurred to Cecelia.

Candice just seemed a strange choice to me. As it turned out, she was a key player and her absense threw off the five way alliance that had been set up. But how did the other team know this? Is the alliance so open that every sees it, even the people on the other tribe?

Or is it a case where we the viewers haven’t been seeing all that much of Candice but the people on the island have? Maybe they know something about her we don’t and realized she was likely to be a member of an alliance.

Another possibility I considered was that Parvati, who had in a sense been competing with Candice for the role of “cute girl on the tribe” might have put in a word against Candice when they were picking who to send. Or maybe Adam and Parvati had an alliance with Candice and sent her to Exile Island to protect her from being voted off.

A final factor in the decision is the idol. Nobody on the winning tribe knows that it’s been found. So Jonathan and Yul would have been the safe choices. They either found it already so no additional harm done or they hadn’t been able to find it so they were unlikeliest to find it now. Sending a new person out to the island to look raised the possibilities of the idol entering play. From now on, most of the players are going to have to consider the possibility that Candice has immunity.

But … Becky? It didn’t look like she talked to anybody but Yul about anything. (I know, editing, but still.) And while hypothetically Aitu needs Jonathan’s strength: Koror. But, then again, it does look like Raro is stronger on paper and in practice, so who knows. I just don’t get these people, maybe. I’m curious why Cecelia was targeted – she’s at least as useful as Becky or Flicka, if for no other reason than that she knows where everything is at camp. Is Ozzy next in line to be booted? If so, then it belies their “weakest link” vote-out strategy, because he’s stronger than Cao Boi.

In Jenna Morasca’s defense, she also had boobs and the sense not to go up against Cesternino in F2, so I don’t know how much her smile actually helped.

Okay, I must not have been paying attention to one of these episodes - why are they calling that girl “Flicka” now?

She said to call her that, IIRC. As for Cecelia…I think she just got tagged as a ringleader of the opposition. It could have been anybody, and they just picked someone they thought was in the middle of the other alliance. Plus you keep the strong ones around for awhile, especially after that immunity challenge.

True; however, in one of the early interviews in Amazon, she said that her big strategy was to take advantage of her feminine wiles to cloud the minds of the men around her. Imagine her surprise to find herself on the first all-female tribe…

I don’t think Yul and Jonathan realized it was Cao Boi who organized the anti-Becky group. Yul and Jonathan both seem to think they’ve got the same position; themselves, a strong female ally from their original tribe (Becky and Candice), and a weaker sacrificable ally from their original tribe (Flicka and Cao Boi). They apparently assumed that the outsiders were Ozzy, Cecilia, and Sundra. Based on their own perceptions they probably assumed Ozzy was the leader, Cecilia was Ozzy’s strong ally and Sundra was his weak ally. Jonathan and Yul might have gone after Ozzy directly but probably figure they want him around for challenges. So they targeted his closest ally to weaken his position instead. If this logic holds, Sundra’s the next to go.

An interesting possiblity is what Cao Boi is doing. He may just be going back and forth with no plan. But he might have masterminded a move where he created a threat for the alliance to focus on and then slipped back out into the bigger alliance. Flicka seems to like him. If Cao Boi really is a strategist and is able to play Yul and Jonathan off against each other, he might go far.

Was Yul really planning on “fighting them off” during the challenge? Did he think he could somehow turn the tables and make them go the other direction? Or fight them to the death? I mean, I admire the never-give-up spirit, but at that point, save your energy and take a dive.

Oh how quickly karma comes and nips us in the ass. If the Latino tribe had not deliberately thrown off the challenge, it’s very likely that Cecilia would not have gotten voted off. With 2 tribes of 5 + 2 tribes of 4 being merged, there were two tribes who are under-represented. (That would be the blacks and the Latinos or the tribes that lost the first 2 challenges.) It’s no shock that the person voted off was one of the minority tribes.

I hate Pavrati or whatever her name is. What a skank.

Jonathan is annoying and strong handed. Clue: You don’t try to strong arm a ROLLER DERBY chick.

I, too, wondered if Yul would honor his vow to Becky and offer up the immunity idol if she were to lose the vote.

I think the idea is to have two men fight off the attackers in a stall tactic. If they can stay upright long enough, the other two can circle around and attack the opposing team.

Cecelia was chosen because they had to break up the Ozzy / Cecelia tie and Ozzy is stronger. Same reason Becky was chosen… there is a (correct) perception that Yul and Becky are thick as thieves.

… but not if he’s still shackled to the rest of his team… I think the idea was that, yes, he was going to try to fight and maybe cause the lead guy on the other team to fall down, thus keeping his team in the game just a few seconds longer. This has shown up in challenges before: he doesn’t stand a chance of winning, but he didn’t come here to quit.

re: Cecelia not getting voted off if Billy was still in the game: this would only be true if Billy ended up on the same team as Cecelia. I don’t remember how the voting turned out; would he even have been on the team that lost the trudge match? I doubt he would have had enough stamina to affect it, either way…

Certified man checking in. Yes, we are that dumb! As you know, God only gave us enough blood for one of our two critical organs.

I just assumed that she must’ve been the first one to quit the challenge, and was therefore determined to be the weak link. The other tribe didn’t want them to be able to vote off their weak link. Did anyone notice if Candice was the first quitter?

The Aitu tribe seemed to have a mass quitting; from the version we saw (which admittedly might have been edited) it appeared all of the women except Flicka quit almost simultaneously. The Raro women (especially Rebecca) dragged themselves around for awhile longer. The result was that the Aitus got tired faster and the Raros where able to beat them in the final conrontation.

It’s an indication that a lot of these players have difficulty grasping the concept of team competition. They’re playing as individuals. Yes, it’s good to have strong players on your team. But once you’ve got all the strong players you can get, grab all the weak players you can as well. They’re still assets, even if not as valuable. Josef Stalin (ultimate winner Survivor:CCCP) put it best when he said “quantity has a quality all its own.”

We had a thunderstorm come through, and our satellite went out during the last 10 minutes or so of the show. The last I saw was when Yul was talking to (I think) Cao Noi to try to convince him to vote for Cecelia.

So, I know the final result ---- but what happened in between?

Cao Boi had a long talk with Flicka, which we were only shown very choice bits of. They were very sure to edit it so we couldn’t tell which way the two were leaning.

At Tribal Council, Cecilia surprised everyone by confessing she was in love with Candice.

Okay, seriously, Yul pushed up on Cao Boi, Jonathan pushed up Flicka (who said she hated being forced to choose sides and play the game this way). Jonathan and Yul got togteher and admitted they didn’t know how the other two would finally vote.

Nothing too interesting at Tribal Council - no last minute pleas or complaints about other players or sinister threats. Unusually, they showed almost everyone’s voting statement (except Cao Boi and Flicka’s). Most people were classy, saying they liked the woman they were voting against and it was just part of the game. Ozzy was the exception and said he was voting against Becky because she hadn’t bothered getting to know him.

Jeff’s words of wisdom after the vote were that they were clearly still a divided tribe.

They wisely decided to drop the family moment this season. That was a waste.

Scenes from next episode: Nothing too amazing. Apparently the Raros are going to have some problems along gender lines. The women will feel they’re doing all the work around camp while the men laze around on the beach. Parvati says she’s had enough of that.

Cecilia seemed a little pissed off at her departure but not too extremely. She said that the people who voted against her had underestimated the contribution she would have made to the tribe.

Okay, that made me laugh, since I started saying “asshole” whenever Ozzy shows up on screen!

Thanks for the recap, Little Nemo. Durn satellite…

Yes, “not classy” definitely defines Ozzy for me. I liked him in the first episode, when he climbed the tree to get the coconuts — after that, he’s just seemed like a bigger jerk every time I see him. Last week’s episode especially turned me off him.

I disagree. It was painful watching him try to spoonfeed logic and common sense to flicka and watching it all go right over her head.
