Survivor: Micronesia - Opening Tonight!

He just doesn’t look like he’d dominate. Yet, he tends to win challenges and have great success. He looks like a nice guy who’d get kicked right away, not the guy who would find the immunity idol and create fire with his glasses.

Yau Man is a hell of a nice guy, and so CUTE! Also, he managed to play in a way that got himself to Final Four and his closest ally the win. He just KICKED ASS that season, mentally and physically.

Oh, and kissing the little turtle hidden immunity idol when he found it was just priceless…

Yau Man was a little old man who was quirky and you’d think he’d have broken his hip and gotten booted first week but he was smart and surprisingly good at challenges and generally likable in a Yoda sort of way.

Personally I liked him, then found him irritating, but don’t mind him coming back. He bugged the young’ns, and that’s always worth something.

Well the Fairplay drama didn’t last long.

I’m newish here (well a long time lurker recent poster again) - are unboxed spoilers ok in this thread?

And I love that Ozzy is back. I love that monkey of a man.

Thanks for the Yau Man answers!!

I enjoyed the episode.

Here are a few questions for you all:

  1. Were there any Favorites that you were surprised that you were happy to see again?

  2. Why did the Fans win the challenge?

  3. What advantages and disadvantages do you think each of the teams will have going forward–not based on the individuals on the teams, but based on their status of “Fans” or “Favorites.”

My answers:

  1. I was happy to see ol’ Perverti again. I have no idea why.

  2. I think the Favorites suffered from a combination of overconfidence and Too Many Chiefs Not Enough Indians syndrome. And maybe a little bad luck.

  3. The Favorites will continue to suffer from having too many people competing to lead (but never openly leading). The fact that they don’t have to struggle so much to get food and shelter means that they will have way way way too much time and energy for interpersonal issues. This will hinder them. A lot. The fans have enthusiasm to spare. They will be disadvantaged by lack of experience, but then again, a fresh perspective could really help.

  1. Ozzy. I never really recovered from his sandbagging of the cute chubby guy on his original tribe and only slightly warmed to him with the “Abandoned” theme later in Cook Islands.

  2. Enthusiasm, youth, energized because they’ve never done this before. The Favorites have done this before. They know what’s coming. They’re not really looking forward to it all that much. And I’m sure it’s just OLD…remember that most of the ex-contestants know each other, see each other all the time on the Survivor Circuit…it’s like having to spend five weeks in almost constant 24-hour contact with the coworkers you’ve been barely tolerating for three years.

  3. Fans will have an advantage because (as was mentioned on the show) they know almost everything strategy-wise about the Favorites, and the Favorites don’t know them from Adam. Also, enthusiasm and a realization that this may be their only shot on Survivor is on the Fans’ side.

And can I just note that this episode was just WEIRD? I’m still trying to figure out if he actually meant to go, or if he was scheming toward something and it backfired.

Us too, my guess is scheming and backfire.

  1. Nope. It reconfirmed my low opinion of both Parvati (whose name Jeff actually pronounced as Parvati rather than Poverty) and Fairplay.
  2. The fact that the Favourites had their two best puzzle solved by far (Eliza and Yau Man) NOT solving the wheel puzzles was not exactly the smartest move. Also, them getting the Fans all riled up by gloating didn’t help either. Layer on top the over-weening confidence, and it wasn’t surprising that they lost.
  3. Favourites disadvantage: known quantity, both strengths and weaknesses.
Favourites advantage: have lived through the ups and downs already and know the ropes.
Fans disadvantage: need not to be so impressed by the presence of the favourites.
Fans advantage: being unknown quantities they don’t have to deal with past reputations.

I’ll pause here to  at the genuineness of Jonny Fairplay’s reactions, and his patently false attempt to redeem his reputation. But hey, at least he’s gone, and that means a lot.

James, mmm…

And I am so in love with Yau-Man! He rocks!

I had no idea the new season was starting tonight. I was listening to Wheel of Fortune and doing the dishes when I heard Jeff start speaking.

Woo-hoo! Survivor’s back!

I think it was the ultimate Johnny Fairplay to Jeff Probst (and Mark Burnett) Fuck You! He made it all the way to the island, probably against Probst’s wishes, and he sacrifices himself in the first episode. Besides, he isn’t going home to his pregnant girlfriend, he’s going to spend a month at a Micronesian resort.

This is why “Big Attitude” players always suck on Survivor.

The ‘fans’ thing is a little contrived. Anybody who would audition for a role on “Survivor” is likely to be a fan of the show.

I can’t believe this show hasn’t gone to HD yet and is still done in crappy old low D. And not just so I can see the babes in their bikinis clearly. The tropical scenery would be so much more beautiful. Speaking of which, I hope we get uncensored views of the one chick from last season whose ass was always blurred.

Also glad I’m not going to have to look at Johnny Fairplay’s ugly puss any more.

Nope, many of them - too many IMO - are aspiring models/actors/bartenders they pick up in and around the reality TV show pick up see-and-be-seen hotspots around LA.

Wow, I wonder how long Probst had to practice to say “Parvati” correctly instead of calling her “Poverty”? Because he said it SO carefully that it was really, really obvious he was working hard at saying it correctly for the first time ever.

Yau Man is even cuter than ever! I’m really glad to see him and Jonathan back. Those are my two favorites by far. Most of the women are there for scenery. Although it remains to see how quickly Amy turns back into her bitchy self.

It’ll be interesting to see how the season plays out. Especially with Crazy Lady on the Fans team. “Are you a homosexual? Will you be my first homosexual guy friend? I’ve never had a homosexual guy friend before!” There aren’t enough  in the world for her.

I didn’t know this was starting, and I’ve not watched the last couple of seasons, but seeing who got booted I’m willing to keep watching, at least for the time being.

I too am thinking it was a scheme that backfired, with a side of “Fuck you all”. I think everybody realized that absolutely nobody could trust him or believe a word out of his mouth and just didn’t want to deal with that sort of BS. Of course BS is an integral part of the game but his is particularly galling, somehow.

MamaTigs, I can imagine that woman’s reaction to being tossed on an island with me…and I’m surprised he didn’t throttle her, since that’s what I’d want to do!

My Tivo cut out for five minutes when they were walking to Tribal Council. When it went back on, Fairplay was confirming that he wanted out. What happened in between? Did he make some dramatic announcement or what?

PS I LOVED how everyone took him at his word and proceeded to unanimously vote the SOB out.

I KNOW! I’m just watching that thinking “Do they let you out of your box once a week or once a month?” She’s never met an actual homosexual man (didn’t she say she “may have worked with one in the 80s”?)? She’s never seen breast implants in person before? Does she live in Pleasantville, before the Colorization?

Rarely are my wishes granted on Survivor. Tonight is an exception. Way to bash his head, Yau-Man!

I couldn’t agree more – it took me a bit after the show to work that out, but I think it was the ultimate “Screw You” to CBS and Probst – they brought Johnny Fairplay back and he wasn’t “good TV” like they expected. Combine that with the clothing Probst-mocking at the reveal, and it’s crystal clear. The man is a worm, but he knows how to take a scalp.
