Survivor: One World May 13 2012 "Perception is Not Always Reality"

Kim had a hidden immunity idol and Chelsea knew it.

But the last time she could use it was when Alicia got voted out. I’m talking about the last council before the vote went to the jury - when they go from 4->3. The hidden idol is no longer valid then.

After watching the reunion I immediately thought Colton’s definitely going to be on the next season so that’s why there was so much focus on him this one. Yuck. This season was either annoying with Colton or boring after he left. Either way it’s not one of my favorites.

This is the biggest cakewalk season since Yul cakewalked. It got tedious toward the end of this foregone conclusion, but Kim totally earned it. She owned the whole back half of this season, hands down.

As for Colton:

+1000. No way I’m watching Colton. I sucked it up before and watched Russell – twice! – but that’s just not happening with Colton, I will definitely skip that season, or Survivor altogether after that.

Heck, I watched Russell three times.

Yul didn’t cakewalk–he was screwed by two tribe members on a twist and had a lot of post-merge work to do. He didn’t win nearly as many individual immunities as Kim did, although Ozzy had something to do with that.

Boston Rob on Redemption Island is the textbook cakewalk example.

This season definitely felt similar, in how the edit had so much focus on Kim that a lot of people were saying she was going to win only a couple episodes post-merge. (I never once thought Rob was going to lose his last season post-merge episode). Compare to say, the season before this one (Sophie over Coach wasn’t obvious) or the last non-returnee season (Fabio).

Just wasn’t a very interesting season, all things considered.

Unfortunately for the producers, the tribe swap ended up with Kim’s three best allies with her in the majority on a tribe with physical guys. Put Kim on the male-majority tribe and things get more interesting.

Yul did have the most wildly overpowered HII of all time - he didn’t have to play it until after all the votes were read, so he could not be blindsided or tricked into wasting it. That was a huge advantage.

I did not remember that. That was a rule?

Yep. They only did it that way twice.

http://survivor.wikia.com/wiki/Hidden_Immunity_Idol:
In proceeding seasons, the idol’s format was drastically changed. In Survivor: Panama and Survivor: Cook Islands, instead of making the player immune before the vote, the Hidden Immunity Idol will now be able to nullify votes that are cast against the holder. When the host revealed enough votes to eliminate a contestant, the player in question will have to draw the Hidden Idol to stay in the game. With the holder immune at the last minute, the person who receives the next highest amount of votes will be eliminated instead. This format was panned by fans, calling the item “too powerful,” by using them akin to the “Get Out of Jail Free card” used in the board game Monopoly. These idols are good up until the Tribal Council where there are only four contestants remain.

Just watched it. In the second to last Tribal Council, I don’t know why Jeff just didn’t write a $1M check to Kim and get it over with. His questions just seem to all imply that everyone else was jockying for 2nd place. And am a bad person if, while Leif was talking, I kept imagining his ears growing to points?

But, basically boring. The only thing I can say is that I was glad to see Alicia voted off. She was just a nasty bitch. Oh, and while I’m usually amazed how the “cleaned up” ladies look worse than their dirty, island selves, I thought Sabrina cleaned up real nicely!!

Sure, but Yul’s tribe merged while down 4-5. Had he not gotten Jonathan to flip and assuming the other alliance could have figured out vote splitting, Yul would have eventually been in a situation like Terry from the previous season who had the same overpowered immunity idol yet still needed to win immunity to get to Final Tribal. Along the way, he would have had to beat Ozzy–a tall task.

I don’t understand attitudes like this. Are you saying that you will watch Survivor only if all the contestants are likeable? Is there some sort of scale-tipping threshold of character quality that decides for you whether you will watch contestants vie for a million bucks on a game show? If so, wouldn’t you have to indeed watch a few episodes, maybe the whole season, for such a decision to be made, paradoxically speaking?

Not only that, but you’re also claiming Russell as a reason that almost kept you from watching the competition after he singlehandedly created some of the most dramatic dynamics (or dynamic dramatics) in Survivor history, albeit by being a raging jerk.

Bottom line is that I just don’t get your stance. Do you want to watch people be nice to each other for 39 days, then give a million bucks to the nicest one?

Bottom line is I’ll watch it if I like the way show is being handled. Including casting. With or without your approval or permission, or your ability or not to comprehend my decision.

Colton is a deal-breaker. If he ever shows up on anything, it had better be to die painfully. Otherwise I will refuse to watch, and I will notify every sponsor of that fact as well.

Like Probst said during the reunion, it’s one thing to have a “villain” that people love to hate (like Coach). It’s another thing entirely when you have someone that people really hate (Colton). Some villains aren’t actually awful people and can be fun to watch, but some are truly contemptible and detract from my entertainment every second they’re on the screen.

They don’t all have to be likable, and indeed the “love to hate” villains often make for the most compelling tv. However, there is indeed a tipping point where someone becomes too contemptible to watch. I was not previously aware that this tipping point exists, but Colton has shone a bright spotlight on that line.

We’re talking about returning players. We already know how contemptible Colton is. The whole point of the question is whether a player we already know we hate seeing on our screens, if they should come back for another season, would that make us not watch. I’m having trouble following your leap in logic to then try and apply this rule to players we’ve never seen before.

You didn’t address this to me, but I feel similarly and those are my explanations. As far as Russell was concerned, I enjoyed watching him and found him compelling. Except for that third time, of course, where he was a non-factor.

I agree. But it’s more than that. I also don’t want to give them positive reinforcement for behaving badly. Giving Colton another shot at a million bucks in spite of, and possibly, BECAUSE his behavior was so contemptible would be rewarding that behavior. And I want no part of that. Probst, are you listening?

For this very reason, I don’t watch the “Jerry Springer” type shows. I wish that the people who do watch those shows realize that they are spawning creatures like Colton.

Me, too. No way will I watch a season with that whiny little dolt on it.
