Survivor Season 30 (spoilers)

I thought Rodney had it with the fire. Wow.

At this point of the game and after 30 editions, anyone who can not make a fire deserves to lose

Mike wins!

I have been backing Carolyn the whole game, but Mike played well an deserved it.

The Second Chance season looks like it will be a lot of fun

+1.

I laughed so hard when Rodney could not make a fire.

I remember when the two women in the Cook Islands could not make fire and they ended up giving them matches and they were still have problems.

Shirin gave a good speech at FTC but there was no way she was not voting for Mike. Dan is still a douche bag. Probst ignored all the pre jury people tonight. I would like to see a little more reunion and less time of them failing to make fire.

I would have like to seen Shane return to the game.

I have seen every season of Survivor, and I just don’t remember some of these 2nd Chance people. Jim Rice (didn’t get a 2nd chance), Monica, Natalie who did get a 2nd chance.

I remember T-Bird from Africa. If I had voted I would have voted for her. Surprised PeiGee got voted back in.

Kimmi and the chickens was an iconic Survivor moment.

I’m not sure why, but whenever a parent shows up in the loved one episodes I immediately think “loser.” Especially if the contestant is a guy and his mom is there, but any gender combo makes me feel that way.

Spouse is the standard, then sibling (ideally of same gender) if they’re unmarried. I don’t know why I have these biases.
During the reveals of who gets a second chance, the first time Jeff pulled the “You…don’t get to go” was with a group of three women where one got to go. He said the first name, you don’t get to go. Then he said the second name, you don’t get to go. As he said that second “no”, that woman was clearly pissed. I was surprised he kept up with the dick moves after that.
Wasn’t Terry the Fireman on two seasons already? Or am I confusing him with Tom the Pilot?

IIRC, Tom was the fireman (in Dolphinboy Ian’s season) and Terry was the pilot (in Cerie’s first season).

So Tom the Fireman who gets a second chance is someone else? A third guy?

er, I mean Terry the Fireman.

Damn, good finale. I was sitting there thinking “either Mike or Carolyn wins first immunity, and whichever one does wins the game.” Which ended up being true, in the end, but not nearly that simple getting there. I couldn’t believe Mike didn’t take Carolyn out either time (Dan apparently didn’t either), since she was the only one with a chance to beat him in immunities and/or a Final TC vote. If Mike takes Will and Rodney with him he wins 8-0. I think he got a bit lucky that the final four challenge was one that actually hurt Carolyn’s chances (due to her age… she clearly suffered going up those stairs) vs something she might beat him at, like the “hold the coiled rope” challenge earlier in the game.

After the final TC I really thought Carolyn might beat Mike… lots of bitterness. I do wonder how bitter the jury members get at someone who just keeps winning immunities. “Hey, alliances are the game, this guy is just winning because he’s physical!” Which is a myopic way of looking at things, IMO - thankfully Jen saw it the way I did (I knew I liked her!) Not to mention that Mike was still playing really hard in all phases (too hard, at the Auction), it’s not as if he was just coasting through challenges like Colby. He found hidden immunities, successfully figured out when his alliance was going to blindside him, etc. I just wish he had been a bit more cutthroat at the end re: Carolyn, but he still got a 6-1-1 vote so it worked out in the end.

Dan is one of the smarter guys from this season (not saying much) but still a douche. I was surprised Probst called him out so hard, even rolling that footage. And Will is also a douche, not surprised Shirin basically ignored his apology.

Kinda surprised Shirin beat out Carolyn in the vote. Maybe all the votes for Carolyn dried up after everyone saw her terrible hairstyle at the finale. She looks better with it tied up in a bun.

Jeff polled the jurors; if it were Rodney instead of Carolyn, Rodney would have gotten three votes, including Jenn. Mike wins either way.

Same reaction here. I’ve seen every season and consider myself a loyal Survivor fan, but I simply could not recall many of those people.

I felt old when Andrew and Shane were introduced, because I remember discussing them on the old alt.tv.survivor Usenet group. The a.t.s crowd liked to come up with nicknames for players; Shane was called “InShane” and Andrew’s nickname was “Maximum Leader Andrew.”

That blew me away; it was completely unprecedented. My jaw dropped when Probst actually ran that raw footage that showed production crew, boom mikes, etc., just to make the point that yes, America, Dan is truly a douchebag. I thought Dan handled his public humiliation pretty well.

Great finale for a lackluster season. The final Tribal Council was excellent. Mike absolutely deserved the win, but I wouldn’t mind seeing Sierra some more. That body is just obscene.

Filthy.

It shows how well Survivor is edited. That we never see any of the production crew or equipment, and seldom see any evidence of the crew or equipment (shadows). Even during the challenges.

Oh my fucking god. that was so hilarious! I know I said I wanted to see Rodney make it to the end and get no votes, but this was way, way better. Much more humiliating!

And not just the fire fiasco. In that last challenge, he didn’t even get one of his puzzle pieces together. Not one. How stupid can you be? And then he spells “Sierra” in a way that only a complete moron would. If he had a brains cell in his head, he’d be too embarrassed to show his face in Boston ever again. I just noticed last night that one of his tattoos says “Rodney”. Who the hell gets a tattoo with their own name on it? Maybe he needs that so he can remember what his name is.

Well, I predicted the winner correctly, and that he would get there by winning the challenges, but I got everything else wrong! Can’t believe they didn’t even discuss voting Carolyn out at that first TC (that we saw).

And Dan voted for Mike! Color me very surprised at that one. Guess he thought as a “super-fan” he couldn’t vote for Dead Fish Will, and Carolyn’s a yucky girl, so Mike it was.

Weird editing at the final TC…no opening or closing statements, lots of people only asked a question of one person, which I know happens sometimes but seemed like a lot more than usual last night.

And the reunion! So interesting! I’m usually pretty neutral on Jeff, but I loved him last night. He put Dan in his place! Word of advice to Dan…don’t bite the hand that feeds you. Too bad more people didn’t even get to speak once, since they spent so much time on that. But I’m okay with it, because it was so cool getting to see that raw footage.

And Will is just gross. What a lame-ass apology, instructing Shirin to forgive him. I found it very obvious he was just trying to save face, and that none of that was sincere. His wife seems a piece of work, too…shouting out that he doesn’t treat people that way. Except…he totally did!

Rodney’s just a clown, and they had fun teasing him with that cake. I want to know who told him that blue suit was a good idea!

It seemed to me that they were anxious to wrap up this unpopular season and move on ahead to to the next. I’m disappointed and surprised that Shane didn’t make it, but he was my only “want” that didn’t, so I’m happy. And my boy Spencer is in, so very excited for next season.

Ellis Dee, the man coming back next season is Terry the Pilot, who lost to Aras the first go-around. Challenge monster, but in my opinion didn’t bring much else to the game. One of my favorite Survivor memories…Aras needling him with “Somebody call the whambulance, Terry’s crying on the course!” Terry was not a good sport.

Ah, thanks much. Terry the Pilot. I could have sworn I heard Jeff say Tom, not Terry, which is what confused me.

On another note, a few episodes back someone posted boxed spoilers that I deliberately skipped but made a mental note to go back and read after the season. Now that the season is over, here is that boxed discussion for anyone else who was waiting until the season ended:

Major Spoiler on the CBS website, so major IMHO I’m really surprised the network chose to do it:

Mike lobbies for the opportunity to be on the next Survivor season, which is comprised of contestants who deserve another chance. Mike said he’s learned more and would have a better chance of winning. (Carolyn is also on the women’s ballot, but I did not see her video.) This strongly implies he didn’t win and therefore did not make the Final Tribal Council, even though he is still alive in the game. It seems unlikely the show would make an exception for Mike and merely be trying to trick us. Perhaps they are under deadline to get a cast together and start shooting. But still.

Per an interview with JP, Mike and Carolyn are on that new show if they don’t win this one. If one of them gets voted in and ends up winning, the eleventh vote getter will get their spot. I think that it more indicates that Mike and Carolyn are the final two. It’ll set up a little drama where the loser gets to try again.

Well, hmm, so now we know they made it to the Finals? If every bit of the show has already taken place with the exception of the FTC vote/reunion, they’re either gonna win it or come in 2nd/3rd – is that we are to interpret?

All we know is that they made it through the episode we just watched. If either is voted out next week, then that person is eligible for next season. If either of them wins the game, they are ineligible for the next season. I believe the cast announcement is made at the reunion show, so if Mike (for example) wins Survivor, but also got enough votes to be on next season, Jeff would announce Mike is not eligible for the season and announce the contestant who won the 11th most votes.

So is Jeff saying they are in the Finals then? Because every other aspect of the season has already taken place and been edited. Then that’s a spoiler, too. However, I think that’s just a misdirection on Jeff’s part. Why would they even consider Mike if he wasn’t voted off? Also, if he makes (err, made) the Finals, he wins. And it’s not close, IMHO.

Turns out none of that was actually a spoiler. The one thing that WAS a spoiler, and was boxed in post 350:

I base this prediction [that Mike wins the million] on interviews with Probst in which he has called the winner “iconic” and “very likeable,” and I don’t think Carolyn fits that description as well as Mike. Certainly none of the other three do.

Yeah. One of the single stupidest people on the show ever. And such a fucking misogynist and a whiner. He deserves to be mocked for the rest of his life about the childish birthday complaining he did. I was so glad that Probst called him and Dan out on it. Dan’s another asshole. Just admit you’re a sexist jerk and promise to stop being one in the future.

I thought it was going to be Carolyn for the win. But I probably would have personally voted for Mike because he played a good game even if his religious proclamations make me want to smack him.

Not a great season, but the next one sounds kind of promising. Did I hear Jeff say at the end of the reunion something like “this season proves it can be interesting even if you don’t like the players?” I thought I heard a passing reference to it being a season of jerks.
