Survivor Season 32 -- Is it too soon to care?

Too lazy to read back if this was mentioned earlier, but apparently this season was filmed before season 31. I wonder what that’s about, and it’s hard to avoid the conclusion that this season will be worse than average.

Not a big fan of BBB, but it’s a lot better than having a bunch of retreads playing. I’ll be watching.

This is all I have found about the new season so far:

If it answers the “why so long?” question I didn’t see it, but I only skimmed it.

My wife and I are suckers for this show and Big Brother mainly because it’s on a “dead night” for us and TV. We do record the PBS shows on Wednesdays to watch later but other shows are not calling for us. We usually pick a winner each and whoever lasts longer gets $5 from the other. That’s about the only real thrill we have from the show. And I agree that all the creature comforts and the silly “challenges” have taken the enjoyment out of the show, so it’s only picking the Winner (along with the various Losers) that have us coming back time and again.

I do hope some day they give Probst some new lines instead of “Come on in, guys” and “So and so is back up for grabs” and so on. A parrot could do that.

I’ll DVR tonight and watch sometime later. If I’m not drawn in by Episode 2, then off the schedule it goes. The show hasn’t been “must watch” for years.

I’m in! Although still recovering from my Spencer disappointment from last season.

The reason for the delay between filming and the premiere is due to the “Fans Vote in the Contestants” format of the last season (Cambodia - Season 31). They always film these things in pairs…the two seasons per year are filmed in the same location, just named differently. So they filmed this upcoming Season 32 while Season 30 was airing. Then during the Season 30 finale, they announced who had been voted in to compete in Season 31, and those people were immediately put on a plane and sent to Cambodia, where the production crew had just wrapped up filming on Season 32.

They had to show the returnee season first because that was what was fresh in the fan’s minds…they couldn’t say, “Well, you voted in all your favorites and we know you’re super excited to see how it plays out, but you have to wait until Feb 2016 to see it! While you’re waiting, though, can we interest you in these complete strangers?”

You know … every season I swear up and down that I have had it with this stupid show.

But then …

every season … without fail … I just get sucked right back into it.

Does anyone have an opinion as to why that happens? What is it about this show and that host (who I just abhor) that is so GD compelling. It’s like once I get a whiff of it, I’m like a dog with the fox scent in my nostrils and I just can’t let it go.

**Why? Why? Why? **

It’s so they can get it done in one take and maintain the flow/reality.

“Wanna know what you’re playing for?”

“Sorry, loserteam, I got nothing for ya’. Head on back to camp.”

“It’s time for you to go.”

OMG! You just scratch the surface. I have been posting for years on another board that is dedicated to Survivor and has no language restrictions except for the two most obvious:

  1. You can’t threaten anyone with physical violence.
  2. You can’t use the N word.

But aside from those two things, anything goes.

I have been ranting for years about Probst and I’ve been using the worst F’ing language you have every heard anywhere to describe him.

And yet … I’m just a sucker for this show. I just can’t turn away.

You certainly don’t have to worry about sounding bitter because I bet I could sound a hunnert times more bitter than you have ever sounded. I explained why in my posts above.

Aw, I love ol’ Peachy. He’s such a cheeseball, but he’s also been a huge factor in the success of the show. (For those who are not rabid fans like me, Probst is not just the host…he’s a Producer and show runner, meaning he has huge say-so behind the scenes as well.)

In addition to what Mahaloth said about making the show easier to edit, etc., the reason Probst uses the same phrases over and over is (IMHO) because that stuff is supposed to be part of the background. You’re not supposed to notice it…it’s just part of the framework that each season operates in. What makes each season interesting and different from one another is how the contestants act *within *that framework. They don’t want us coming onto the message boards the next day talking about that wacky introduction Probst gave last night.

Not saying he doesn’t annoy sometimes, of course, but I think the show would never be as good if he ever decided to leave.

And the soul-crushingly redundant:

“Once again, immunity is back up for grabs.”

I had some free time today, so I did something I’ve never done before: visited the page where they introduce the cast and read the little bios.

One thing that immediately leaps out at you is the wacky shoehorning required to fit the cast into their BBB theme. Especially the male ‘Beauties’ – one physical trainer, one Army vet (is that genuinely a career? The Vet part, I mean), and a gardener. All three would seem to be intensely physical occupations, and they naturally would belong in the Brawn tribe IYAM.

Or look at the Brains: a doctor, FBI agent, chemist, computer programmer – okay. But an ice cream store manager? A social media something or other??
The other thing is that it looks like the Brains tribe is starting with a major handicap on the physical level: their team’s average physical age is 41.5 vs 29.7 for Beauty and 30.5 for Brawn. Being 10+ years older really matters in the physical component of challenges.

Interestingly, the men as a group average out to 39.0 while the women come to 28.8. Hmmm. Think there’s any bias in being younger and cuter counting as more important while selecting women than men?

Maybe some self selection going on? Older women typically perform extremely poorly in challenges.

I don’t know of any way to analyze that statement using some kind of Statistics. But I decided to examine the “first boots” of each season to see just how women fared vs men.

I remember that Sonja was the first boot in S1 and Debb Eaton was first in S2. Sonja was 63 and Debb was 45.

I only got as far as the first 20 seasons.

Just for fun, I would like to challenge you all to guess just how many of the first boots in the first 20 seasons were male vs femaile. Just pause for a sec and take a guess and see how you do?

Males 9
Females 11

That’s one of the things I love about this show…anyone can win given the right circumstances and skill. Old, young, black, white, male, female…everyone has a chance.

That is very thought provoking. I have never considered that before.

I may have to rethink my entire opinion of Smeghead.

I like the constant repetition by Probst, it’s part of the cheesey ritual of the show. In fact, I read an interview with Probst were he referenced these repetitions as part of the show’s ritual. It’s part of what makes Survivor Survivor.

Not sure I really understand that voting decision…

About average. Still not getting that Tai guy, though.
