Sushi restaurant dessert offering.....

We frequent a local sushi place, going on average once a week. They often comp us with items not on the menu. Recently, our waiter brought us a dessert that we are trying to deconstruct/reconstruct.

The dessert was served in an emptied orange half. We each got one. The orange shell was filled with diced fruit. There was orange, pineapple, and mango. There was also finely diced cucumber (which initially was thought to be coconut). The salad was tossed in a dressing that was heavy on wasabi (WoW!).

The combination of the fruit’s sweetness and the wasabi’s fire was awesome.

Anyone had this?

Well, if nobody has any ideas I guess I’ll ask the chef next time. He doesn’t speak much English though.

I have eaten many dozens of sushi meals including in Japan and I have never heard of anything quite like this. It is probably a concoction of the chef at the place where you had it.

Sounds interesting. A lot better than green tea ice cream (yawn).
My normal “dessert” at a sushi place is salmon nigiri.

An interesting dessert at one of my local sushi-go-rounds is a jar of fresh caramel. Heavenly.

Took my brother and his girlfriend out to their favorite sushi place* last night. At the end of the meal, we were presented with an orange peel artfully carved into a little bowl, with some slices of orange in them.

*Well, his favorite; she can’t eat fish due to health issues, but she loves him a lot.

I’ve seen mixed fruit as a dessert at sushi places (my old favorite place used to do a BIG one in a halved pineapple) but never had it with a wasabi dressing. That sounds…odd – horseradish and fruit is something I’ve almost never had.

And now I want to.

Are you sure it was wasabi and not sriracha (the other “hot” used in sushi a lot lately)? I can imagine sriracha w/ fresh fruit pretty easily.

It was definitely wasabi, with something else (white color overall). I know sriracha. Love it.
