SUVs are the scourge of the road

Before anyone who actually uses an SUV for its intended purpose gets upset, this is not directed at you. Many owners of SUVs do actually use them off road and even to haul equipment. But it seems that the majority are simply owned for status. My biggest complaint is the amount of cfc’s that they emit - a car that big (used primarily for commuting) is simply not necessary - they use copious amounts of gas - do westerners really need to become more dependent on middle east states for fuel?; they diminish the available parking space in cities where parking is hard to find; there are safer alternative vehicles available that are more compact. I know there are more reasons, so please, rant.

Oh dear.

Hey, I’ve got a cool idea!

THIS time around, everybody SWAP SIDES!

I think everyone should be allowed to drive whatever kind of car they want! It’s a free country! As long as I can afford to pay the gas and oil bills, why SHOULDN’T I drive an SUV? Besides, they’re fun! I have to carry drums around with me, so I need it! And I’m less likely to be killed in a traffic accident than if I was driving a Volkswagen! And it keeps my kids safer! And some fancy REGULAR cars get worse mileage anyway!

No way! Take the bus! Everyone that owns their own, personal vehicle is a snob!

Whats that you say? You need 4 wheel drive for the snow? Take the bus! They almost always get through! Whats that you say? No bus in your city? Buy one so everyone can use it! After all, if you can afford to buy a new Jeep or Expedition, you can afford a New Flyer. That way society in general benifits from your spending!

Hey, Ike, great idea! This means I stay in the middle, right?

Okay, well, I drive my station wagon during the week, and my van when I have people and stuff to haul around. Neither one’s an SUV, so this is kinda pointless.

Say, Jehova68, there’s a search functions (one of those little buttons way up on the right) that you can use to search to find one of the eight other threads which, in the past week, have had things to say about SUVs. Welcome to the SDMB!

I don’t like it either, but at the same time I want the freedom to choose the vehicle I like best. I think the thing to do here is apply a surcharge to those purchasing vehicles like that to offset the numerous inconveniences they cause, and then apply the collected cash to things like wider parking spaces, or to lower the cost of gasoline.

Man, the fact that the elves are forcing me to drive an Explorer us driving me nuts!

Damn elves.

I could really care less what they drive, since I too drive a guzzling fuel hog. BUT … it would be nice if the drivers look all around and DOWN before chaning lanes. Too often I’ve been run off the road by an SUV owner who has then given me hand signals that equate to my car was too small for them to see. HELLOOOOOOOOO.

You know what’s really silly? People using SUVs to haul other forms of transportation! Like SUVs pulling a horse trailer, or a boat. What’s wrong with riding the horses, or putting the boat in a river to get where you need to go? It just blows me away.

CFC’s? Don’t you mean carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide?

[switch sides]Damn’ I need a bigger truck so I can see over the Explorers. If those Civic drivers need to see, they can just edge out into traffic. Damn’ tincans.[/SS]

SUVs are the work of the devil! A pox on all SUV owners! Why, you can tell just by LOOKING which ones are unworthy of owning an SUV! Rich bastards- I hope they all flip 'em and die a firey death!

I think everybody should drive a '30s muscle car.

The SEARCH function is really neat.

The “I HATE SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES” thing has been done before.

Thank you.

      • Hey, the Civic drivers aren’t my problem. First they go and buy a little car to begin with, and then they go and put even littler wheels on it. And then go and put a 500 watt stereo in it and play trashy rap music, so you can hear all the pieces of their cheap, sad little car rattle. If you wanna go around cleaning up pollution, you’re gonna have to put all the rap singers and groups in jail too, you know.

Maybe it’s the air conditioners?

Speaking of Civics, my office is on the 10th floor of a building. I can look down into the parking lot to see my Cherokee SUV. Gues what? It’s shorter than most of the sedans in the lot! It’s about the same size as say, an Acura. SUVs too big? Not mine.

That’s the funniest thing I’ve seen all day. Can you suggest this to the GD mods?

Although it’s been awhile since air conditioning has been switched over to CFC-free. I think most cars after '96 have CFC free A/C.

Johnny L.A. how much did you lower your Cherokee? :stuck_out_tongue: I actually drive a Civic (that’s not lowered or fitted with any extraneous stereo equipment), and I can’t see over even the smallest of SUV’s or even 2 wheel drive Ford Rangers.

They’re about the only personal transportation around, short of a Hummer, that can support a ball turret with quad .50s.

Hmm…, what side was I on before?

fizgig: Shorter in length.
